Avoid intakes which replace the stock rubber intake tube with an aluminum one, and avoid intakes that leave the filter out in the open in the engine bay. These styles are crap. Whatever power increase the filter would give is negated by the intake temp rise due to the metal pipe and warm air going in.

Best style would be a rubber tube routed to the filter, in its own box, with an opening to the front of the car.

Apexi filters are said to be very good. They are pretty expensive though, like $130. I had one but took it off because I was loosing power without a heatshield and headlight scoop.
Just make sure you get a heat shield and a source of cold air for the intake if you decide to get a cone filter.

Try to get one with a Zirconium based paint if it has a metal tube.
The zirconium helps with shielding and transferring heat alot quicker allowing the tube to actually cool the air as it passes through.
But I like rubber tubes...They're low-pro.

They were thinking about providing a long enough intake tract to provide torque in NA applications.

And uh...where else would you put it? It's not exactly easy routing a rubber, mass-production pipe around the PS and AC assembly.

:-P Didn't think you were!

Mazda didn't really have a choice as to where to put the intake. Felix Wankel always believed having the exhaust + spark plugs on the same side is a horrible idea. Same with the intake. His intention, for the most complete burn / combustion cycle, was for the spark plugs to be on the side alone.

...oh.
So...and this is another one of those question's....wouldn't it be feaseble to have it forward facing?.....but it would still get the same amount of heat soak right?....damn, now I think I understand what they went through...

Seriously man, the best way to make some power on an NA FC is replace the stock exhaust manifold with some kind of header / highflow cat combination, and put a cone filter adapter on your stock air flow meter leading to a cone filter with its own box. Search for a thread in this section called "airbox turned out great" by a member named "Attica". He made an awesome air box for this type of home built setup. Here is how it will sort of look without the box:

As far as my sig pic:

I really miss the rotary, but it takes too damn much work and $ to get any power out of them for real world street driving (ie. CARB legality)

...that maybe true but I'm satisfied for now with the power I have.....I've never had a car with such a get up and go attitude. as sad as that may be.
But I'll never get rid of her.

I disagree, put a holley style intake manifold and whatever you want on top of it (TB, carb, whatever). We'll talk about power aftewards

Mazda has been designing cars for a long them, they know what they are doing.

The black ABS intake tube is not very conductive to heat, and the stock heat shields on the manifold to a great job at keeping heat out of the engine bay.

If you replace the intake with a metal tube, you will always have heating no matter where you put it in the engine bay...
