Is the intake restriction on the S4 the filter or the intake pipe?

I can't afford a cone filter right now - it's on the list, soon, but for now I'm going to be pushing it to get my injectors cleaned.

Is the restriction on the S4 intake the filter, or the really skinny intake snorkel? If it's the snorkel, would drilling decent sized holes in the lid of the air box help airflow any? Or will the hot air negate any gains from the freer flow?

Because if I get a cone filter, I'm going with a K&N, and fabricating a cold air intake.

Aah. Hrm. So a cone filter isn't really worth it until the engine is ported? I have enough scrap irons to practice on laying around... Winter break project, maybe. If I can dig up an engine lift. Then by summer, I might have finished breaking it in (I don't put many miles on during the school year).

I didn't say that ("cone filter isn't really worth it...")...My cone gave me a nice little "oomph" at the top end, after the entire exhaust system was modified....

Hm. Right now I have a racing beat cat replacement & presilencer, and some form of aftermarket exhaust (not totally sure what it is, it was on the car when I purchased it) that needs replacement in the next year or so.

Eeh, I'll probably end up not doing anything until I get a cone filter. There are far too many other things I need to fix/work on. And I hardly need the car to be any faster right now... *grumbles about the stupid speeding ticket*

Here's my cheap Ebay intake filter. I cut some Home Depot flashing to make a heat shield it was like $5.

Also I had to port the restrictive plastic gasket that came with the Ebay air hog.

Don't waste your money on "performance" panel filters, especially if you plan to fit a pod filter later. The filter is not the restriction, the box is.

I don't know about that. I cut the top of the filter panel off, leaving just enough to bolt down the filter, and it has made a noticable difference. I can see how the stock box is still a bit restrictive since it only draws from that little port on the right side of the box. I want to wait until I get the materials to make a metal pipe running straight from the TB to the filter.

We've all done that, at one time or another. A good cone blows that setup away. Been there, done that

Ah, good to know, I'm definatly going to add it to the long list right next to creating my own fiberglass panels.

How well do you think it would work out if I knocked a hole in the metal under that box, and used one of the brake ducts to pull air from? I've seen this done before, but the only thing that worries me is that in the winter I'm going to get snow crammed up there and damage the cone or end up sucking water into my engine.... or maybe the water wouldn't be a big deal, if wouldn't really screw with the rotary as long as there's not particulates in it, right?

I think you misread my post. I said "the filter is not the restriction, the box is". You modified the box...
