intake on my 88 GXL
hey guys, i just got a filter from a friend for free, because he bought a new AEM setup, so i was wondering what i need in order to hook up the filter to the stock plastic hose, instead of using the big *** stock intake box. i took it out and looked at it and the big metal piece (O2 sensor?) in between the box and the plastic hose is squareish and my filter is rounded.... so what kind of adapter do i need in order to hook this up for temporary use?

I think K2RD.com makes an adapter. And that is no O2 sensor; it's an air flow meter (AFM), and they arepreaty expensive and vital to the running of the car so do not pitch it. The adapter sells preaty cheap.

ok i got the adapter, but theres an extra hose that goes to the engine, is that where a breather goes? because while the engine is on, it sucks in air at a fair amount and when i rev it up it sucks a LOT or air, can someone tell me what that part is for?

The extra hose is the air inlet to the air pump. Put a small K&N style filter on it. Don't open vent it, because it will suck in dirty air which will end up going to the rear rotor of your engine. Bad thing.
Also, if you are remounting your AFM (air flow meter) make sure to orient it in the stock direction. Any tilting of the meter could effect the reading due to gravity (there is a flapper door inside).

Get a breather with a 7/8" opening. K&N only makes them 5/8" and 1". I oredered some today with a friend, we got the 1" and will just clamp it down.

so if i get the 1" i can just put it directly onto the air pump? how much do those cost?, because i was going to just buy some cheap one at the local KRAGEN, but if i could get a K&N one it would be better.

Zip ties are the best.
I have snapped 2 metal brackets in the past 5 years. Several wire coat hangers, nothing works as good as zip ties.

Hah zip ties... Maybe ill try that
I have the same problem i have a gxl and my AFM is simply laying where the old airbox used to be
I got the HKS system it came with a bracket to mount to stock position but it actually pulled the whole system foward way too much and the filter was directly in front of a metal wall in my engine compartment so insted of restricting its air flow even more i simply let it sit in the stock airbox position. No problems so far but i hate the setup Gotto figure out another set up with a cold air box
