I might have a working air control valve sitting in my garage that I'd sell for cheap.

Never buy Mazda parts from the dealer. Used parts for 86-88 RX-7s are so common, that you can often find a $1200 oil-metering pump for $25.

Check the "For Sale" section of this forum, and don't let yourself get screwed by your local Mazda dealer.

Can you email me about the air control valve. My email is ojaivalleylass@sbcglobal.net or Yahoo IM me as ojaivalleylass.

The hot wire of the split air solenoid valve connector is completely broken off at the base. I put electrical tape over the bare wires so thery're not touching anything.

Can I risk driving my car in the meantime? It seems to start and run okay in my driveway.

If your going to replace the air control valve, dont pay 400 bucks, just got to a local junkyard and pick one up for 15, if your worried about it working properly, print up that FSM, and bring a DMM to test it.

the split air solenoid valve is just there to inject more air into the pipe (split air) that goes to the converter when in fifth gear.

It's connected to a B/W wire which is 12V and another wire L/B which connects to the ECU. When in fifth gear, the ECU grounds the pin and the valve opens. Otherwise, the valve is closed.

I really don't think u need to change the ACV valve. Just check if your split air solenoid valve is still working (pops when you apply 12V). Or you can just disconnect it (I don't think it's gonna be a problem).

but as SURESHOT mentioned, something does not seem right in your wiring. Make sure the main 12V is not bare somwhere by just carefully following the B/W wire and looking at the FSM (electrical diagram).

For more info on ACV, you can have a peek at my web page (in sig) under emissions->air control valve

The wire was bare, frayed and is now broken. The white wire (2 wires in the connector 1 white 1 black)and still live enough to give me that lovely shock that reminds us to disconnect the battery before touching anything electrical.

So after disconnecting the battery, I taped off the live wire (that had ben the source of my fire). The live wire fully explains the fire - in my book anyway.

I found a pic last nite of another RX-7 where someone had completely clipped the connector off the ACV (learning some terms) and then sold it to this other guy. I'll insert the jpg here.

So it sounds like I can still drive it until I can get another ACV. It starts and runs in the driveway just fine. Without a live wire there should be no fear of fire. My concern now is to protect the CAT from frying. Any advice or comments?

I don't think your CAT is gonna fry because of an inoperative split air solenoid valve. The rest of the ACV is still working so you are still getting air to the cat either directly via the split air pipe or indirectly via the exhaust ports.

the only thing is that you are not getting as much as you should in 5th gear.

I don't know if it's better to leave that split air solenoid valve open (more air to the cat than you should under 3,500 rpm) or closed (less than you should in 5th gear)

If you just disconnect it, it remains closed forever.

If you take it out and remove the poppet and put it back disconnected, it stays open forever.

I think the latter might be better, but I am guessing.

maybe HAILERS will jump in on this. He usually has done some form of experimentation about anything you can think of in the car.

I want to thank all of you who wrote in and supported me through my crisis. You guys saved me and my car, it's running now and all it cost me was time to research and gather info from this site.

I'm so lucky to have this website as a resource. Don't ever go away or change. Without all of you this could have turned dangerous for me or cost me many hundreds of dollars.

I'm still planning to replace the ACV soon, as I live in California. I'm hoping to get one from one of the members that wrote in here.

I have a feeling that the split air solenoid valve wasn't working when I bought the car by how it get's hot when she has to work hard climbing this steep incline in Thousand Oaks on the way to LA. Going to try a different road next time I have to go to LA. I don't go to LA very oftern luckily.

Probably the antifreeze that leaked a couple of days earlier got in with the frayed wires and the connection to help create a small fire. Lucky to have caught it before real damage or danger occured.

Thanks again. I learned a lot and maybe this thread can be informational for someone else too.

Later guys.
