Go for the K&N, it looks better, lol. Looks is an opinion. The fact that the HKS sucks at filtration is a GOOD reason not to get it. I'd go K&N between the 2, but personally would go cheaper with a custom one.

I agree I've heard nothing good on the HKS (especially nothing on the "good looks"...I think it looks like ***).

Funny story on the HKS intake - the Japanese call it the "poison mushroom". No kidding!

Anyhow, a K&N filter, or a K&N clone, is a great way to go. If you want to spend the money on the best, get the Apexi intake - filters great, VERY well built.

I don't get the "do exhaust first - you get more from it". Considering exhaust runs 4-5 times the cost of a cone intake, it's not as big of a bang for the buck. A cone wakes up an RX-7 like CRAZY - I'm still amazed at the difference every time I put one on a car. It's night and day.

Speaking of, I bought one of those cone intakes and adapters off Ebay for $20 for my fiancee's RX-7. Got it and installed it yesterday - really not a bad setup! The cone was good quality, and the adapter could use some grinding to be optimal, but it was generally sturdy and well-made.

The HKS filter is a foam based filter, and although has great flow when clean, very poor flow when dirty.

If you allow it to get dirty it tends to leak around the edges or even worse the vacuum from the motor tends to suck the filter apart.

So if you go the HKS route clean it every couple of months, or you will be replacing/repairing the motor early than you would otherwise.

Now I am sure that someone will post how they have had the HKS for 5 years and never cleaned it and it works fine, and maybe it does, but I have seen a lot of dirt pulled in and plastered upon the sides of the intake tubes when using these filters and can only recommend them for race duty and not street driven vehicles.

Go with either the Apexi (if your budget will allow) or the K&N if you are going for a cone style filter. They are the first and second best out there.

*edit
Also, the Bonez and a couple other cheap SS filters really only keep large objects like birds out, and are really poor at protecting your engine.
