Installed MOMO steering wheel!
Installed MOMO steering wheel!
Well I put on my MOMO steering wheel this past weekend. It is a MOMO Monte Carlo 350mm; with hub. First I'll say the wheel itself is beautiful and simple, not to flashy; it sort of fits the interior of the second gen nicely. O.K. getting the stock wheel off is easy as pie, there are four 10mm nuts on the back side of the wheel; you need to turn the wheel to get at the top two. At this time you will either be happy because you got the airbag out, or you will be bloody because you forgot to disconnect the battery cable
. Alright so now the airbag is out. Next you will need to unhook the plugs for the airbag. Now get a 21mm socket, a 3inch extension and a 1/2 inch drive. You will need a pry bar to hold the wheel steady while you break the nut loose. Next just yank on the wheel until it comes off. Here is where it gets tricky; the stock wiring for the airbag is routed through the turn signal cancel hicky, and the plastic is too long and prevents the MOMO hub from seating right. You will need to cut the plastic and get the green wire with the red stripe out for the horn. I never got my horn button to work; but that was just because I did not realize I needed some of that wire out of the plastic thing in the way, so I cut it all off. The MOMO steering wheel goes on easy with 6 alen head screws. If these directions confused you, just ask me and I'll tell you what you need to know.
Now that it is on. I will say to everyone "If you have a vert; get a nice new steering wheel." It was the single most dramatic improvement in driving quality yet (and I've done alot). It makes you feel so much more in control. If you have a non-airbag steering wheel, the effect may not be so dramatic. I am giving the new steering wheel idea "two thumbs up."

Now that I went back and re-read my original post, it sounds like I was drunk. I was not drunk, just a lil over-excited about the news. Oh well; like I said, if anyone needs info for the steering wheel swap on a vert, let me know.
Yo,
Okay, well I stand by my earlier MOMO horn button instructions. It works on my car! Thank goodness I don't have the airbag, I have the motorized mouse that is...broken. *snicker*

A steering wheel with an airbag has a totaly different set-up. There are three wires all inside a plastic arm coming off of the turn signal spring. It needs to be customized a lil to make it work. The only reason mine didn't work is because I cut the whole plastic arm off before I realized I needed it. Non-airbag wheels are probably alot easier.
Mine is a 350mm, I think rarest has a 320mm. Mine is just perfect. It's small enough to give a lil extra control but large enough to see all the guages and turn easy. The only thing I can't see are the turn signals, but who cares. I would stick with a 350mm if any of you guys are considering this.
350 is the way to go. I had a 320 for awhile, with no power steering....good god!!! It was not fun in parking lots. Now that i have the Mazdaspeed D-cut 350mm, its much easier to drive.
I would highly recommend a steer column spacer that pushes the steering wheel away from the instrument cluster.  Most of those aftermarket steering wheels are relatively flat, and I bet you hit the turn signals and cruise controls pretty easily!

This will also give you the added clearance to see the turn signals!  Don't even hesitate to pick one up - once installed, you'd swear why you didn't pick one up sooner.
