According to the Haynes manual, you don't, but according to people who have done it, its far easier to drop the subframe. Get the Haynes manual or look up the online FSM in the faqs for how to do it.

You need to drop the exhaust from the cat back and just unbolt the driver side of the sub frame. the steps are in the 'front and rear axle' section of the fsm. But the steps are a little fuzzy,

Just drop the subframe it makes your life much easier. Plus there are only Two big bolts then one rod that drops down that hold the thing on. Just position a jack under the subframe and one under the Diff. It'll come right out with ease. I've done those too many times and once all by myself.

dont drop it
just lower it, so the rear link still holds it
it is very easy, i have swapped it... wow, alot now...
an word of advise is, on the half shaft, make sure they are in the UP position before you put the diff in, it will make it easier to slide the shaft into the diff.
