My cruise accelerates and decerates at speeds above 55. This happen to anybody else? Know how to fix it?

first thing to check is the cruise control actuator cable. if it is too loose or too tight it acts funny.

Out of the 7 7's that I've had, the actuator cable is usually the problem. Make sure it is not overly loose. You can adjust it no problem.

On one car the cruise switch actually caused the problem.

Hope that helps.

Is it an N/A? If it is, the CC actuator motor is vacuum controlled.... check the vacuum lines maybe...

Actually, the opposite is true under normal conditions. Cruise gives "just enough" gas to maintain a set speed. However, the typical driver will tend to be more heavy footed to regain a targeted speed.

The trick is to find a road open enough that extended time on cruise makes sense in the first place.

The first "mod" I did with my car was to take the cruise control cable off of the throttle body all together. Better response was immediate due to the less drag on it. I never have used CC even when it was available.
I proved to my mom I could get better mileage than she could by NOT using CC. This was in a '93 Astro (totally pimpin' conversion in it) 4.3 V6. She knew the usual mileage she got on the 200 mile trip to Chicago as she did it a couple of times a year. I did it in her van with the CC off and raised the mileage about 4mpg. Hmmm... I guess having the CC gun the engine to put it back up to speed isn't so good for mileage. A smooth foot is better. Sure this might not be the same, but it reinforces in my mind the uselessness of CC. On this drive to Chicago you could put the car on CC, lock the steering wheel in position, and set the alarm clock when you get close to civilization and everything would be OK. I-55 North from Springfield is about a boring a drive there is. If you ran off the road the most that would happen is you'd run into a shallow ditch. Kurgan (sorry to drag your name into this) knows this road I'm sure. Central Illinois is way flat. The kind of roads around there are roads perfect for CC by most peoples standards. Not mine of course. Now that I live where there are hills and twisty roads everywhere, CC seems even more useless.

Your cruise control must have been faulty. It shouldn't have to "gun the engine to put it back up to speed" because it should never get far enough away from the set speed to require any more than mild throttle inputs. Despite how easy it is to get on boost with just a small throttle input in my car, I rarely see boost with the CC on.
It's been proven that a (working) CC system will use less gas because you can't watch the speedo all the time so are constantly making small corrections. And on long trips in heavily policed areas it's invaluable in avoiding tickets from creeping above the limit. Been there, done that...
