Importance of rubber O-rings on 4-piston calipers?

Well today I took apart my front brakes, to change pads and clean them up a little. I noticed that when I took them apart, my passenger side caliper was missing the 2 0-rings that go between the two halves of the caliper, where the brake fluid travels. It did not appear to be leaking, and Ive never had any braking problems. I natually replaced them when putting the caliper back togehter, but I was just wondering if it is common to leave the 0-rings out, or if whoever did the brakes on this car last was a retard.

that is freaky man!!!! I would think they would serve the same purpose as the water O-rings in out motors...

btw did you pistons come out rather easy or did you have to do alot of coaxing?

I don't think there are o-rings between the two halves. They are sealed from the factory and the service manual strongly suggest against not to remove the halves. According to the parts fische they don't seem to exsist, just don't pull them apart.

Here, maybe this pic will help. I drew it up real quick, so sorry for the crappy quality. No, not the rubber sleeve where the pistons go, but little o-rings that go to where I have pointed out. I drew the picture as if you were to take the caliper halves apart and lay them down with the pistons facing up.. Hope this helps..

*edit*-Ok datebase error wont let me upload a pic..

*edit 2*-
Here ya go:

According to mazda there are no rings, atleast purchasable. I have rebuilt them, but did not take them apart (warning in FSM not to). I think it's just sealed from the factory with the bolts that hold them apart. Maybe someone who's taken the halves apart has more insite. But I don't think they exsist.

Well the driver's side had o-rings, and the passenger side didnt. I purchased a set of O-rings and installed them in the passenger side. Im not too worried about it, just was wondering.
