Im trying to buy this new rx7 but it wont start!

Im trying to buy this rx7 off a guy. He is really eager to sell but i told him Ill only take it if i can drive it away. He said he drove it into his car port for the winter and now it wont start. IT just spins over and over and over...Its like its not igniting...He said it might be the fuel pump...but why would i smell gas then? is it possible that the spark plugs are wet? or is it possible the fuel injecters are to blame...

If an apex seal goes what does it act like when you try to start it?

thanks.

Talking

Pretty simple:
1) take off one plug, take off the pump's relay (or just disconnect pump) and bump starter. You should see spark (that way you make sure you get electrical juice)
2) take off fuel line.....oh wait you say you can smell gas ? Then you are OK there....
3) If one chamber is not combusting (apex seal gone), then its kinda "bump-bump-pweeeeh-bump-bump-pweeeeh" (one chamber is not compressing the air

I'm sure more people will drop in and give you ideas....

try this...

poor a little oil in the spark plug holes. its probably flooded and all the gas washed whatever oil was in there. my bro did this and it worked.

My RX did something similar to this a month back. I have it stored in my dad's pole barn for the winter. Normally, one of us goes out there once a week to start it up.

One time, it just rolled over until the battery was dead. We pulled the truck over to it, after pushing it out of the barn, and had to use jumper cables. I just floored the thing and after a bit it started up. Smoked a while and spewed raw gas out the exhaust. Massively flooded.

You situation sounds similar. Like some guys said, unhook to fuel pump and get some jumper cables. Crank it for a while and then hook the pump back up. Keep it floored until it starts sputtering, then let off the gas and don't touch the pedal for while. She will probably smoke alot and smell extremely rich, but it will clear out within five to ten minutes.

if it sounds like it's turning over really fast (like there's no compression) it's flooded badly.
Try pulling the EFI fuse in the little fuse tray near the driver's side strut in the engine bay and cranking it for lie 20 seconds at full throttle. Replace the fuse and it might start right up. You'll want to change the oil if it's been badly flooded.

There's more indepth instructions for unflooding these motors available, do a search for "flooding" here on the forum since it's a comon problem.

good luck,

Cory

I forgot to add that you shouldn't start your car and not let it warm up. If you just need to change spaces in the driveway, for example, you should take a spin around the block to let the motor get up to temp. Short cold-starts are infamous for resulting in flooding.

After 5 hours and multipule ATF treatments (over 7) My hands are unbelieveably scratched up from undoing sparkplugs all day long. Everytime, remove plugs, ATF, dry plugs off put them in, hook up wires...over and over and over. It started and has been running GREAT ive never drivin a smoother running rx7 yet. Idle is perfect ( never had that either) Absolutely NO over heating, I drove to work and the temp stayed under 1/8 the whole way and i was at 170km/h ALL the electrical systems work, wipers (int), headlights, clock, the doors have the nice pockets and door lights "never had these kind before " Has the 2 back seats in leather, car came with CD player with mids and tweets speakers. Rims shiny, car just got a new paintjob racing green, and tinted windows.

The car cost me ~ $830 USD ($1200 CAD)

I owe it to your help guys! thanks alot!

The guy just wanted to sell it cause he thought it didnt ran - he is young and said he was going to buy a civic now or something. lol.

Sounds like you got a good deal there. Congrats. Alot of people use this to their advantage when buying an RX-7 from unknowing owners. When I bought my 7 I told the owner that he'd have to come way down in price because I wasn't sure if I was buying a dead car. He came down, I payed, he signed the title, I did the EFI fuse trick and drove away leaving him a cloud of blue smoke to remember me by. I mainly did this because he kept saying what a POS it was. He sees me almost every single day and even though I'm probably wrong I like to think that he regrets selling her.

Man, I am just WAITING for a deal like that to come along. Its too bad that some people cant get thier 7s started, but most of them are too lazy to do the research and find out whats wrong. Oh well...
