i'm newbie. first time on this with some questions about rx7/rotary stuff
Hey well i'm a newbie and I need some help from you fellas. Theres a guy I know that is selling an 88 rx7 and he says that one of the seals needs to be replaced. he wasn't quite specific but he says theres black smoke so what i was wondering is there any shops around the OC that could do this kind of work? how expensive is it to maintain a rotary engine? and is there any other engine i could get around $1500? sorry i'm newb it'll be my first car

depends on what seal it is. Oil seal? apex seal? turbo seal? If the body is mint then $600-$1K would be borderline.
As far as rebuild:
we have RotaryRessurection, Atkins, Racingbeat, Mazdatrix........
Check the vendor list or search your local forum (WEST)

try out rx7world.com they have sell rebuilds and the guy does a real good job as well. you can get one for real cheap or reall expensive depending on what you want. give him a call to his names ernst. but like electric said don't buy a non running fc when you don't know anything about it. if you reall want one wait and buy one running and learn off of that. I can tell you from experience I did it that way and spent way to much time and money on getting it running. all that money could have been put towards different parts that I want.

Yes, you can buy Japanese import engine all over eBay.
Are they any good?? Some have had sucess with them, others not so much.
If I were you, I would keep my eyes open for a different deal, I paid $400.00 for mine in running and driving condition.
About putting a piston engine in an RX7:
I know 4 people with V8s in them and about the same number of people with rotarys in theirs and quite frankly, I have no intention of putting a V8 in mine.
You do not really need a lot of power to learn how to drive well. In fact, most people find that a very powerful car can get you in a lot of trouble.
The only words of wisdom that I have to offer are what I have learned:
Keep the car as stock as possible for value
Do not modify or improve on a system until you understand it's function
If you want to learn to drive, go to AutoXs and hone your driving skills with a stock car before springing for upgrades
Others may disagree with this, it is only my experience and nothing more.

If you are really interested in a piston swap, the LS1 swap is most common. I've seen at a local HIN show that one person was working on an RB26 swap as well.
But owning a rotorless rx kinda defeats the purpose of buying one :\
Even if no one in your family knows about rotaries. Theres more than enough info on this site to work on the rotary, anyways good luck and welcome to this site
