Depends on your year/model of car. If the ECU detects something wrong (its probably your OMP if you have an S5 car). The ECU goes into limp mode. Theory behind that is too restrict power in order to save the motor, but still allow you to drive it somewhere safely.

if the ECU goes into "limp home" mode. IE, you unplug the metering pump or the ECU detects a problem with the metering pump, you will know it. You cannot even "limp." Its more like, collapse on side of the road mode. If you cycle the key a few times it will go away and then you drive until it does it again. And repeat the process....
