I've heard about LIMP mode Don't know if it's on N/A models.

Try searching LIMP MODE?

So the car drives pefect the first 10 mins? Then won't go past 1500 rpm?
Do you still have the original cats?

Check out the MAF sensor down the intake by the air filter, sometimes it is as easy as leaning the connection.

What does the car do when you shove it to the floor?

What does it do if you give it about 30% throttle?

Does it do it in gear, in nuetral, cold, hot?

Do you mean that is runs fine until it has been running for 10 minutes?

The MAF is suspect to me, but there is no limp mode for 86-88 RX7s (s4.)

If you get me some more information, I think I can help.

have a look at the pic I attached the MAF is the box just above the K&N, if you have a stock air box you may need to move it out of the way. When you can acess it try some "electronics cleaner spray" (I pruchased mine from canadian tire) unplug the connector on top and spay both ends and spray the sensor part inside the intake as well. I had to do this every couple of months because the oil from the K&N would get on the sensor, and it would run like crap.

Soia:

I have a quick (somewhat unrelated) question, did the installation of that hot air intake make a difference in your mileage?

For mine, taking air from the engine bay instead of the factory cold air intake cost me 3 mpg highway and about 6 mpg city.

I am pretty sure that was the cause, I also adjusted the timing at the same time though, that is why I wondered.

I think you may have something on the afm, but the tps could also be bad, not allowing it to go to MAF regulated fueling.

I never really paid much attention to my mpg to be honest, but I did notice a big diffrence in the throttle respose and it seemed to rev up a bit quicker, the car had a pre silencer inplace of the cats when I bought the car tho, so maybe when I added the K&N it was the combo of the two that made the diffrence.
If it did make a diffrence in the mpg it was a small on in either direction if anything it may have been slightly better.

Best highway I ever got stock was 29 mpg
Best highway I ever got on engine bay air was 26 mpg

Around town went from 24-25 to about 19 mpg

(I usually drive gently and keep throttle position constant as much as I can to save on gas.)

Like I said the 29 mpg tank was also an experiment on 12 degrees advanced ignition timing (which makes too much engine noise for my comfort.)

I still have all my cats and mufflers in place (this is probably bad for mileage.)

Make sure that your AFM is pretty well Level. If it is all "cockeyed" in the Engine bay the Flapper inside it will not be able to move back and forth...Another Thing,is If you still have Cats on,they could be clogging up,and the "crap" inside will hinder the Exhaust and make the engine BOG..and Finally,I would Change the Fuel Filter.Seeing as you are New,I am assuming that this Car is also New to you(recent purchase). So the Rule of Thumb that I go by is " If just bought..start replacing the Usual Stuff"..like plugs, oil and filter,Fuel filter..**** like that. That Way I know I can put my Mind at ease and Know that the Car Is "now Tuned up".You can Only Guess when all that Stuff was Changed..Hell it could still be original..Best of Luck, and Welcome to the RX7Club!

I talked to noname5 a little more and the symptoms (as I understand them) are as follows:

The car starts normally. It runs fine (including revving) for about 5 minutes.

I am a little foggy about the next part, but the car won't rev past 1500-2000 (which it bounces between) after 10 minutes of driving.

Flooring the gas pedal yields the same outcome as easing into the gas, nothing past a bounce between 1500 and 2000 rpm.

The car starts normally cold (I don't know about hot.) It also revs to 3000 rpm after starting (which is a normal function of the water temperature sensor.)

During the entire process, the idle remains rock solid.

Theories so far:

AFM (listed above, but would this work for a little while and quit?)
Temperature sensor (Would the engine start normally if this were bad?)
TPS (would this suddenly stop working after 5-10 minutes?)
vacuum leak (the idle is rock solid.)
Timing (would it run great for a while?)
Fuel pump (should give initial burst of acceleration from idle, then taper off)

Please advise, as I am personally greatly puzzled by this.

Thanks.

I did just think of something that may help.

This is a link to the diagnostic code reader (do it yourself.)

These codes are only displayed while the engine is running, but may clue you in as to the actual problem.

Maybe this will help some.
