You would be much better off finding a turbo2 instead of turbocharging a 6-port (non-turbo) engine, or swapping one in. they are tough to find, but if money is no issue, your chances are greatly improved.

Turbocharging the non turbo is NOT a bolt on. Requires fabrication of almost every part (manifolds, downpipe, intercooler piping, TID, etc. etc. etc.) and upgrades to the stock fuel system.

Check out the FAQ for answers to all your questions.

hey, someone with an RX-7 from further north in Ontario than me

well, the easiest way to do this:

find a turbo parts car/try to buy the following:
- engine (shortblock or core)
- ECU
- transmission
- driveshaft
- differential
- half shafts

those are the basic things you will need, and so you will practically be swapping out everything having to do with the power and drive train.

if you can do all the work yourself or have someone you know help you, this project actually won't cost you that much. just be sure you know what you are getting into.

well that's a whole topic altogether. it really depends how you want to use the car.

staying non-turbo it's going to take a lot to go fast in a straight line without doing some serious engine work.

but it should be noted that it's not hard to make as much power as the stock TII with the non-turbo. to do so though, it will require you to build an engine that is "ported". you can read up more on it here:
http://www.rotaryengineillustrated.com/re101/ports.php

i personally really like the non-turbos. since you don't have much power you have to pay more attention to the "details".
i'm planning on doing an engine build over the winter. i'm aiming at 200 whp, which is not too hard to get, but if i a threw a similar amont of money at a turbo it would be much faster.

other advantages to NA include being more reliable and tolerant to abuse, better on gas (don't know if that's an issue for you), and you can make a much lighter car.

i like to think that it's not all about power. in fact on many of the meets when we go on cruises, there might be monster 400hp cars and fast 3rd gens, but the cars in front are usually non-turbo. it's all about what you do with it

there are quite a few non-turbos running in the 14s for the 1/4 mile, without any radical engine modifications.
but really they are better suited for a twisty road a race track.
you could also look into lightening the car if you stay NA.

but yeah, the turbo can do very well at the drag strip.

turbo n/a:
turbo intake manifolds (must port match)
Turbo BAC, ACV, Anything on the manifolds
Fuel pump
coolant/oil lines
down pipe
new vac lines
turbo throttle cable
turbo/ manifold
boost guage
a/f guage
boost controller
the list goes on
itd probably be easier if you just used turbo intake manifolds, that way, you dont need to cut the frame, make a custom DP etc.

you can always just buy a turbo 2 engine. jdm-online.com sells them for $650 and you dont have to go looking around at a junk yard or try to turbo your N/A by your self.

just an thought

It's usually a good idea to rebuild those cheap engines though... who knows how long or where they sat, what the internals look like, etc.
