I'm getting a Clunk When I Shift Any Possible Ideas?

When shifting between gears there is a clunk. I’ve been told by a shop that its the u-joint going out on the drive shaft I’ve also been told by a neighbor that it is the transmit ion mount going out from his own experience. I’m out of town away from my car right now so I can’t look at it my self to determine the problem would any one have any impute on this scenario?

"Transmit ion mount".......

It's probably either a bad u-joint or differential mount.

Yea... I know its the diff mount... While you are doing that mount you might as well change all of the mounts.... It makes a big difference in driving.

If the clunk occurs in lower gears its the front U joint, in lower gears the rear U joint. Clunking regardless of gear then think diff or tranny mounts. Its not common for both U joints to fail at the same time but possible.

I am pretty sure it will be the front differential mount. I could tell on mine because it actually felt like it was hitting the car when it would make the clunk sound. I had mine welded solid, no problems since and it was a helluva lot quicker then trying to replace that stupid rubber mount.

Front diff mount. It's easy to swap but time consuming.

Get a Competition Diff mount to help prevent this from hapenning again.

It's a common thing to break. You have 15+ year old rubber which gets stretched every time you shift so it's bound to tear apart. Drag launches kill them very quickly if you have wheel hop...

I'm on my 3rd diff mount between 2 FC's.

I heard that the camber links can wear out easier on convertibles as well, could that be it?

I had the same problem... it was the u-joint. Unfortunately, this means you will probably need a new or remanufactured driveshaft as well.

Have fun... I didn't!

Front diff mount, i have the same issue.

Should i get the solid or the regular diff mount.

The only reason why the solid looks better is cuz its cheaper, but i heard it was a bitch to put on..

DirkyDirka, after thinking about your problem i am guessing it has to do with the still broken Air intake temp sensor that i forgot about a long time ago when you didn't have the money to replace it, as far as i remember it is still in pieces and can be causing the bucking issue, the problem with the diff mount was quite apparent when i drove the car and the 3 pieces it is sitting on the floor in was quite a noticable problem.

anyways, i have a spare temp sensor now so i can toss it in there and see if that cures it, if not it probably is a TPS issue. just bring the car by and i will check it out.

now back on topic.

lol but if it's the diff mount then i guess that was a waste? the driveshaft replacement i mean

my car does the same thing. 88 TII 10AE but i've heard WAYYY more people have the common diff mount problem than a U joint on the driveshaft...

maybe that's just me?

before I order this thing I want to make sure its the front diff mount. I put a pry bar between the subframe and the front of the diff and the whole car lifted. If it was broke wouldnt just the diff move up? I need to order whatever parts I need today so any help is appreciated. If I dont come off the clutch real easy It clunks if Im turning it clunks. It does sound like its hitting the floor of the car.

Why would you need to buy a new driveshaft if you have a bad u-joint? Are RX-7 driveshaft u-joints not replaceable? I was in the Jeep scene for a bit.. and replacing U-Joints is a piece of cake.... Threw a lot of u-joints... even under torque... never had to replace one driveshaft because of it though.
