i'm a doof (miata shifter into S5)

so i'm at the junkyard and there's a miata there! steal it's **** and shift rod cause i figure same tranny same shifter. without actually putting them side to side, i install the miata shifter. tighten down the bolts and....... no movement.

take the shifter out to compare, the miata's lower ball is about 1/4" lower than the FC's and is smaller to boot.

i searched and VeitFC sais he used a spacer, but didn't take a pic and i can't figure out where he put the spacer....

anyone know what i need to do to get it to work? i don't wanna remove the lower cover cause then it'll tear like my last one and that's $40 down the toilet.

I hope by "steal" you mean "pay for". Otherwise, I have half a mind to issue a 7 day ban...

hmm? Well lets hope so, I would have given aaron another half mind, not that I have any influence around here, I'm more of a joke

Anyhow... Check the thread in the archive about making your own short shifter. The thread won't be on the first page. Anyhow, it will have a picture and tell you how to make the spacer that I believe you need.

Peace

well with no help from you guys i did it.

i took a 3/16" tall piece of 1 1/2" reinforced tubing (for water pumps) and cut three wedges into the side to accomodate the bolts in the shifter cover and put it between the cover and the top of the shifter housing.

smoother than before as well as shorter. thank you mazda.

I wish you would've taken pics of the tubing and how you cut it. I would've liked to have seen it and maybe done this myself.

1/5 inch plastic reinforced rubber tubing. cut about a half inch of it off to make a 1/2 in ring then used a grinding wheel to get it to 3/8" (mistake in original post)

just think of it as a ring you'd put on your finger that's got a diameter of 1 1/2" and is 3/8" deep.

ya, the cup holder is hardcore. it makes the big stain look even better.

Are you serious, a three year old could do it. Just remove the shifter surround and unscrew the allan bolts and take it out.
