Question ignition timing wierdness

i searched but couldnt find much specific on this, any way i checked my timing today and it had been advanced about 1cm past the yellow mark, so i set it right on the yellow according to the FSM and the car ran like ***. much less power at all RPMs. good CAS,and all plugs getting power. I was under the impression (or delusion?) that advancing the timing wasnt good for turbos. true or not? can someone explain what its supposed to be set at? i would be eternally gratefull!

advancing the timing has nothing to do with the turbo. ignition timing is the rate that the spark plugs spark at during the combustion cycle.
if the spark plugs spark too early, (advance)it will make you run lean. making your spark happen later in the combustion cycle (retard) will make you run rich.
i changed my timing on my T2 and it didnt do ****, but maybe i didnt advance it or retard it enough. were you doing it right? was I?

all the turbo does is spin. which is controlled by airflow going through the turbine wheel. the timing of the spark really doesnt have much to do with the flow of the air that comes out of your exhaust ports. maybe the spark could be way too lean making the turbo run a little warmer, but i cant see ignition timing being a problem for the turbo.

sorry i wasnt too clear about the way i worded it, i meant i thought i heard that advancing timing too much on turbocharged cars increased the chance of detonation and that it was better to leave it at 'stock' settings or something to that effect. it doesnt seem to work well on mine though,i put it back where it was and runs fine.but the car isnt exactly stock either though. i was just wondering what the appropriate timing is (if there is one) for a t2.

correct, advancing it too much helps detonation occur as i said. turbos also help detonation occur. the two are usually a bad combination unless you have alot of fuel.
so kids at home: dont irratically advance the timing on your turbo FC.
