I was just wondering what kind of car does the 2nd gen RX-7's compare/ compete with? MR2 turbos? Old 300zx turbos? Of course, I'm talking about over here in the States (not Japan or UK).

everything in the Rx7/944 seems very similar, with the 944T having slightly better parts all around then the Rx7. I own a TII and my bro's friend has a 944T. The biggest difference I noticed was the brakes. They're incredible (almost painful) in the 944T. A couple years ago I owned a '90 GXL and a friend had a 944 Non-Turbo. Same story with build quality, parts quality, etc. 944 is a small step above, but the parts work together beautifully in those cars.
On a side note, what about the Rx7 non-turbo and the 240SX? Thge 300ZX non-turbo from 90-96ish would be a pretty good comparison too if you ask me. I normally compare them to MkIII supras and 944's since that's what I was looking to buy

If you are comparing NA FC's I'd say the NA 944 a turbo Z31 300 zx or the newer Z32 NA 300zx.

I compare mine to a McLaren F1.

No, wait, I compare it to NOTHING. There is no comparison, no replacement, no other.

I LOVE MY TII!!!!!!

I think the Z car is not a good comparison. It is a heavy luxury sports car (3000lbs +) I think the closest match is the 944. German engineering is still a bit ahead of Japanese though.

You can't discount it's Japan origins.&nbsp The best rival it has out there is the Nissan Silvia/180SX/200SX (variants) with the 2.0l, 4-cylinder, single-turbo power plant.&nbsp The car has similar weight, dimensions, and power output (~190hp) against the FC3S turbo.&nbsp Hell, it uses almost identical wheel dimensions and offsets too!&nbsp If were living in Japan, the Silvia would be a strong choice for me.

Well, in competition, the 240Z, GS-R, and BMW 325i are my main rivals..

But that's a bit different from your question..

But here state side, the 240 is nowhere near the FC, even in N/A. My best friend has a 93 hatch 240 w/ 5 speed, and it is a very differemt beast. However, we will be doing turbo engine swaps at about the same time, so we shall see.

Those damn 325i, they should be detuned or allow the RX7 to be ported !!

Remember, the rotary engine was a German idea .

Yeah, the closest car is the Porsche 944. Mazda even had an ad where it says "The new RX-7 will run even with a Posche 944, it'll also run about $20,000 less." Definately MEANT to compete with this car. Hell, just look at 'em, 50/50 weight, incredible handling, it LOOKS like a porsche, FR layout, even the phone dial rims were on the porsches .

All my friends call my car a 'jappper-porshce' or a 'pseudo-porsche.' They call the FD a 'japper-vette' HHMMMMMM....

Oh man, good call. Felix was a kraut wasn't he! (I'm 1/2 German, so don't get offended anyone) The FC is so close to the 944 in many respects. I think I hit the nail on the head, no? And people say I'm an idiot!

I don't no much about cars in the US, but we don't have many 944's overhere. I think the direct rival of the FC N/A in the netherlands is the Honda Civic/CRX 1.6i 16V vtec. It's also a high rpm engine (160hp/7000rpm) and has a system that is simular to our fifth and sixth port, namely the vtec.

One of the problems with the honda's is that there are a lot of them overhere, so they are fairly cheap and you can buy lots of aftermarket stuff for it. FC's on the contrary are (that's one of the reasons why I like it so much) very very rare, (actually as rare as a honda crx that is not riced out )

Marco.

Lol, seriously!

Actually, it's interesting this subject comes up. About a week or two ago I somehow made it into a public library in Mountainview, CA, and I found a BUNCH of old car enthusiasts magazines from the 80s and 90s. Of course I had to check it out. There was one with a spread of all the performance cars and how they compared in a Car and Driver, when I flipped to the 1990 RX-7 Turbo II, all the blurb talked about was how similar the 944 and TII were, from performance numbers right down to the body styling. If we were talking about another country, say Japan, then I'd agree with Ted. But in the US, I don't think there's any question about it, a swapped 240(silvia) or an mr2 are very similar, but not as close as the 944.

Steve

P.S. For me, my car's own personal nemesis is a late model Ford Crown Victoria. Especially the ones with lights on the top or in the window. These bastards are EVERYwhere! I'm outnumbered...

Why does everyone say the FC looks like a 944? Could someone please post pics where you think theyre look nearly identical? The FC looks SO much more like a 928 than the 944. I understand the performance comparison, but looks?!?!?

Id say the perfect rival for the FC is the 240.
