Idling at 3,000rpm!!!!!!
Idling at 3,000rpm!!!!!!
Hey, I just bought an 87 rx7 se and I instantly noticed that the car was idling around 3grand. So, I turned the idle screw all the way down but it only went down to 2.75. So, I didnt know what to do so I just didnt drive the car. However, after I changed the alternator belt, the idle went down to about 1.75.... I dont understand this because I am new to the automotive world and I still have alot to learn about cars, exp. rex's. So, if anyone could tell me or give me any hints of how to fix this problem I would deeply appreciate it.
From the FAQ at the top of this page.
My RX-7 rev's up to 3000 RPM everytime I start it when cold
Yep, part of the accellerated warm up process. Start the car with the clutch pressed in, and the car in gear if you don't want it to do that.

many things can cause a high idle. first thing to chek is the BAC. But to do the job correctly, I would go to the first stickied thread andf download the manual for your ride. It has a hole section devoted to troubleshooting high idle. Could be as simple as the dash pot not set right. But you have to do the cheks in the right order to get it right.
1 check throttle valves
2 chek fast idle cam for releasing
3 chek intake for leaks( use intake cleaner )
4 chek TPS
5 chek BAC
6 chek air bypass solenoid
7 chek timing
8 chek anti after burn valve
9 chek DASH POT
10 chek air flow meter and air tep sensor in air flow meter.
11 chek ECU.
Its not as simple as looking under the hood, but you can do it if you take the time to down load the manual, and READ.
