Question Idle, tps? maf? help

We've been trying to get someone to work on my car for a long time now but noone wants to work on them. I found my manual and started to read troubleshoot on my car Back firing sputering and not idleing. It said i needed to get a TPS SENSOR for my 1988 model rx7. I have no idea how to install this and noone in my area knows how to. If you know what tools will i need a picture of some sort of the engine bay, or any help will surely help me out. Others told me i may need to check my MAF Sensor try running it without it and see if it idles. I'm not sure , what do you think

Does it idle at all? Cold/warm?
Backfiring/sputtering, does it sound like a lawn mower?

A bad TPS would cause a wandering idle, unplugging the AFM (MAF) will cause the car not to run at all.

No it will not idle but if i hold it at about 2-3k rpm and someone adjusts the throttle line it will stay momentarily but it still sounds like it's about to die. What exactly does a TPS do?
thnx

TPS=Throttle Position Sensor. It does just that. It sends a signal to the ecu indicating the position of the throttle so the computer can control the timing, mixture etc.
Check for vacuum leaks, and before you install the TPS, check out the one that is on the car. If you search, you'll find a write up.
