idle problems

Alright, before anyone flames me, I already did the search on this, but none of the threads are dead on with the info I need. Anyway, when I start the car cold, I get the fast idle (1800-2000 RPM) for a long period of time. Basically until the car warms up to normal temp. Then, once the car has been turned off, and I start it again, I get a jumpy idle until I actually drive the car. The fast idle thing just started (after I did the auto to manual tranny swap), but the jumpy idle when started warm has been going on for a while. Any help would be appreciated........

Ummm...I am going with the good old O2 sensor. Those things really are quite stupid. I am leaning away from an out of wack TPS because when you restart it you get the same problem. I think mine might be the both so they are both getting replaced...along with most of the car!!! Well good luck, if you get anything concrete or find out anything respond since I am as well interested

First, the O2 sensor is not in the loop at idle. The two most likely causes imho would be a misadjusted TPS, or the rich/lean screw is misadjusted. A small vacuum leak would do the same thing. I think that the reason the jumpy idle goes away after driving it is the spark plug warms up, giving you a greater margin for error on the mix. Also, after the engine sits for a while, you may be overheating the plug/wires causing missing. Well, anyway there's a few things to check out. I would put in a set of leading plugs just to eliminate this as a possiblility.

First guess would be a vacuum leak. Get out the flammable brake cleaner or carb cleaner and start spraying at all potential vacuum leak area. If you hit the leak the idle will either smooth out or raise rpm. Do this first to prove it is not a vacuum leak.

Dont use brake fluid or carb cleaner cause it may melt your vaccum lines and some plastics. Use a propane torch (not lit of corse) to find vaccum leaks, its more acurate anyways.
