Identify This Noise - Stange chatter

Identify This Noise - Stange chatter

So my car has a strange chatter. After searching I am still not convinced my noise occurs as in the threads I read.

I hear the chatter in this situation:

- When i get on it. It chatters for a few rpm.
- I can get it to chatter if I cruise and I am barely on the throttle. It will hold the chatter for a little time.

any ideas? much appreciated.

if you can roughly estimate the area where the chatter noise occurs we can better get a idea.

I have a profec B, but I will try turning it off to see if that is the problem.

Can you feel it or just hear it?
mostly just hear it. I can sometimes feel it too but its very faint.

I can't really pinpoint where its coming from and it only does it while i'm driving so I can't really pin point it!

Check the u-joints for any stiffness in their movement. I think their are ways to test the driveshaft without removing it from the car. You can search for those if you want, I always pop off the driveshaft and wiggle the u-joints around.

Drive it hard as you can til it breaks. The broken part might be the culprit.

Knock sounds like chatter.

Exhaust?? I had a similar "chatter." When idling, rev the car slowly.... do you still hear the chatter?
My engine gives off a weird harmonic between around 2K-3K rpm that vibrates the exhaust system. I first heard it while decelerating through that range as well.
Have someone rev the car while you stick your head under it to pinpoint the location.

I have the exact same chatter, Sounds like its in the shifter for me and it may be the shifter. I do have an aftermarket one.

I used to have several chatters.

First off check tour mufflers they have 3 hangers. One will go twords the sides of the car in the direction of the bumper. Then one of the other ones will be on the opposite side towards the center of the car. The hanger sits almost directly above the gas tank heat shield and when the 20 yr old rubber finally breaks the hanger now rests on the heat shield. Add some vibration and you have some annoying chatter.

Second, if its INSIDE the car check all your trim pieces. Even if you don't use the glove box those screws holding the hinge on still manage to loosen up. after that happens they're all loosy goosy and rub together causing chatter.

Next check to see if the windows are firmly seated in the weather seals. they will cause chatter through the actual mounting bracket if they vibrate.

finally check under your hood. Are all the rubber hood rests there? if not the hood could be sitting at some odd angles.

Ok I ran out and got some more details/video with sound

Please excuse my cinematography, I'm not Steven Spielberg.

-The sound seems to not exist until the car has been driven a while (once the gear oil gets warm in the tranny?)
- The sound is clearly loudest in 4th gear between 2800 and 3200 rpm.
- In other gears you can occasionally hear it when you let off. 3rd gear if you are cruising with your foot barely on the throtle and get like a 'slack/pull' effect on the drivetrain it can be heard.
- As you can see in the video I stopped to take the rubber boot off so I could try to pin point it. You can feel it if you are holding onto the top of the tranny.
- Only happens in gear, not free spinning.
- There is a pretty crazy resonance in the exhaust the kicks in about the sametime, not sure if that has anything to do with it (one or the other)

- last year I did a rebuild on the engine and got a 'problem free' transmission from a board member which ended up having 5th gear grinds (even though I specifically asked about that) and ever sicne I've installed this tranmission and drove it I have had this noise. Which kind of makes me think it isn't the drive shaft or u-joints, since it is the same one I had. Also, being since it begins after the car has been driven a while.

Sounds like Idler Gear rattle, when in gear and all gears the idle gear will have enough free play to ping and chime at small intervals to create a harmonic sound, But at different changes in torque and load the idler gear will rattle. This can be due to hydrodynamic inefficiency in the gear oil allowing excessive play.

Have you tried changing the transmission oil recently? Or checked the level at which the oil level resides? If you haven't, it wouldn't hurt to replace the gear oil with a proper or higher viscosity. If that does fix your chatter problem, you may need to rebuild or replace the transmission in the near future.

left the back of the car and put it on a stand after that get into the car and put it on 1st gear don't push the gas pedal just take your foot of the clutch pedal until the rear wheel starts moving, get underneath of the car while the wheel is moving if you heard any noise then it might be the u-joints but also take alook at it; if you didn't hear any thing while the car is moving off the floor then it might be the drive shaft or it's possible to be one of your shocks need to be changed.

that's true there might be a crack in the cat and the sound only appears when the speed is decreasing. take a look at that too, and the shifter.
