Identify the Hybrid!

S5 Hotside with stock waste gate... Now whats the cold side and what type of seal does it take?



1) Dynamic Seal
2) Encapsulated carbon seal
3) 4 piece carbon seal??

I'm going to wager a guess and say it uses the stock s5.

T04b? I have heard thats what it might be any confirmation or more specifics as to what it may be?

Looks like t-04b cold side housing, and up to a t-04s trim, depending on inducer/exducer diameter. Likely will accept a dynamic seal, depending on the thrust plate used. Here is a comparison of the stock s4/s5 cold side housing vs. the larger t-04 housing:



I ground away the lettering and number pad before I polished mine but it looks very similar in size to yours.

Any Ideas as to what trim?

I spun the turbo by hand feels quite smooth, no shaftplay but the hotside wheel is pretty scarred up (eaten apex before). Not only that but some of the blades on the coldside wheel are ever so slightly bent Maybe 15 thou at the max, does that constitute a new wheel?

[(minor wheel diameter)x(minor wheel diameter) / (major wheel diameter)x (major wheel diameter)] x 100= compressor trim


[2.18/2.751]^2 x 100 = 62.7

^^ Hey I wrote that post!!^^ Glad someone in 4 years used its info.

That hybrid uses a V-Trim T04B compressor wheel and old school T04B housing. It most likely uses a dynamic seal, but theres no real way to know till you open it up (can't see the back of the back plate from pics).

Take the thing apart and find out what you need to buy to rebuild it. Might just need the s4/s5 rebuild, but most likely will need the dynamic seal too. Make sure to mark the shaft and compressor wheel so when you reasemble it, it goes together "clocked" correctly in case it was dynamically balanced.

Ohh yeah, you said "stock wastegate"... make sure you port the wg out some for better boost control. The V-Trim does pair nice with the stock turbo's turbine, granted the wg gets ported and you have a good exhaust (3" straight through type system such as Racing Beat etc).
