Lightbulb Identify this FC!, or the RX-7 i'm buying

Hey all. Well, after months of searching, i've finally discovered my way out of the boring world of piston engines. She's a FC NA, exactly what I wanted. I need decent gas mileage, so a TII was way out, and I dislike the 1st gen interior.

Someone responded to my classified, said he had a FC he'd unload for a few hundred beans. Clean interior, very little rust. 165,000, but hey, it's a Mazda. It only needs a fuel line to be perfect.

Problem.

He never gave the year of the car.

I need your help, rotorheads. Help me identify the year of this bad larry! The pictures are here:
http://jgpoulos.tripod.com/car.htm

P.S. I'm going to do only simple mods to this RX-7. I'm thinking a nice low-restriction (read: open) exhaust, cold air intake, and underdriven pulleys. What's a good source for cheap FC parts.

that is a 86-88 GXL.....i would be wary of a rx7 with 165k on an original enigine....get the compressison checked...and if you do buy it be ready for a rebuild soon

only a fuel line......yea right.....look into it.

other wise for a few hundered i'd say ok.

YEAAAA THAT WAS MY 200 POST!!!:1party:

mmmm. Gold baby.

Looks nice, have you seen it in person?

Cheap FC parts - anything you make or is machine shop made. Exhaust will cost a slight premium due to the higher temperature resistant parts needed in a rotary.

165K is about 3/4 of the engine life, but defintly get a compression test done by MAZDA. Be sure they tell you how they do the compression test specifically for a rotary engine.

I thought GXL's came with rear wipers. Also I see that it has all the factory decals and badges except the ones on the sides. I'm thinking it's one package modified to look like another.

I think it is an 88 SE. I had an 88 SE years ago and it did NOT have side badges. It did not have a rear wiper either. Also, in 88, they "Mazda" and "RX7" on the back were badges, not stickers. I can tell that the Mazda is a badge, but I can't tell if the "RX7" is a sticker, or if the badge popped off. I say that if they are both badges, you definitely have yourself an 88....

Do you have the VIN number, I can tell you what it is in 4 seconds if you have the VIN number.

I would most definitely say its an 86-87, prolly an 87. Got the 2+2 & no rear wiper. Without those GXL wheels I would say 87 SE. Unless someone replaced the rear glass with an SE one, then it might be a GXL.

yup it is the sport
have one myself

5 lug wheels with 15" tires

aero package including the wing on the back. and to aero pieces in front of each wheel

4 pot brakes

vented rear rotors.

think with the 86-88 only the sports and the TII had the variable assist p/s

doubt it is the GXL no rear wiper, no GXL tags. prolly no power options in the car either.

Yeah can't be the SE unless someone did a brake conversion 'cause the SEs had four lug wheels.Has to be a sport or GXL from '86-'88.

It is a sport model

All 86-88 cars had speed sensitive power steering (if equipped with p/s that is)

it is not a GXL because of no rear wiper and no side badges. It is not a SE since they dont have 5 lugs

Wow! Thanks, guys! So we can assume that it's an 87 or 88 Sport, right? Cool...

What was the defining characteristics of the sport model, someone already mentioned vented rear discs and the little wing.

Ok, here is guess #2 for me... It is an 88 sport. It has badges on the back instead of stickers.... but that spoiler is throwing me off. I bet someone added it.

Anyone have anything else to say about the "sticker vs. badge" point of view?

Someone let me know, I coulda swore SE stood for Sport Edition. What would be the differences in the 2 if there were any?

se was the base model, it meant nothing. THe sport package in 87 also had badges not stickers and was considered an SE sport, not just SE. As stated before the base cars were the SE's. I am positive this is an 87 to 88 sport. Sport meaning it came with the wing and the brakes and all that other cool stuff. Plus, it came with the turbo suspension. It did have the 5 bolt wheels and they were of the GXl flavor. I now all of this because the car pictured is exactly like mine even the color. THe only thing throwing me is the rear seat. I was under the impression that the sports did not have rear seats. I am not sure though. AN easy way to tell a GXL form a sport is the AAS suspension. If it has it it is a GXL if not, it is a sport.

P.s. The hoods were steel on most, I think they changed sometime during 88.
