to begin with i am learning to work on cars with my 7 - so cut me slack pls
2nd off yes i had some help from a mechanic who knows his **** so i didnt **** up too badly..

put a "working" transmission into my car recently, just finished few nights ago anyhow... couple issues now..

1) battery seemed to spark when i put (-) cable back on after everything was back together

2) interior dummy lights came on, but engine would not turn over

- im thinking i put the starter back together wrong? or it got wet somehow or something wierd? i cleaned it with some brake/parts cleaner

3) transmission itself only seems to go to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th gear

-this one im going to be very sad if i have to take everything back apart

anyway i am kinda bummed cause i took my time on this project and did it right, had the FSM and haynes manual sigh....

i think the starter could be put on wrong also... i remember it being very hard to get together

 

Did you have the starter tested? Radio work?

Sometimes 5th + R are a bit sticky to put into gear.

 

I'd bet you re-assembled the starter wrong, if you indeed completely took it apart like it sounds. Check all the wiring running to it as well, make sure all the connections are in the right spots. As for the tranny, I bet it's just bad.
