Idea for my 88 SE

Ok so I've decided that my 88 SE is going to be my project/learning car. Right now I am planning on fixing the small problems all around the car. Change the driver side latch on the door, fix the passanger side lock. Change the sunroof and rear hatch. and get a new fender. However after that I don't have a set plan. I plan on hopefully getting a Mazdaspeed kit eventually. For now its mostly going to be cosmetic for lack of money. Then I am going to repaint it after I get the full kit and fix the dents.

My question really is for after that. I plan on rebuilding or getting an new engine after my current one goes. My question is should I rebuild my NA motor and port it so I can push it to about 200HP or should I find a Turbo engine and rebuild it (or if its already ready to go) Would it be better to go the turbo route or the NA route? I am willing to do work but I need to know whats more worth it. I am pretty sure I can do the install myself (with some help from friends) but I am just curious.

after the engine rebuild I am going to go into suspension and then focus on finely tuning it. My goal is to turn this car into a street car that I can be competative at the track with, but also function as a daily driver.

Any ideas you guys have feel free to post. Also I see the FC FAQ but I was wondering what other places I can get info on RX-7 and Rotary engines. Thanks in advanced.

i have a 88 SE Street Ported. Runs well, runs strong but its one thing to run a ported rotary. but IMO a turboed rotary is the only way to go on a 13b. just my 2 cents

Congrats on having a plan for the most part. Youve stated several ideas I too will be doing to my own 88se. Though the biggest parts of it all will occur once the a rebuilt streetport is installed.

alex, all rotary engines can be ported!! i would generally say the easyest/cheapest way to get more hp is to go with a turbo engine, rather htan stick with the N/A

You are starting with a nice model first thing. No power options(minus the sunroof) to mess with.

Just set yourself up a budget. Can you weld? Do you have access to power tools? Even a nice lift? If not, set it up to where you can afford it.

Good luck. There are many ports that can be done. Streetport, half bridge port, full bridge port, j-port or a periphreal port. Do a search on engine porting, and you will find a ton of information.

Hey thanks for all your input. I was afraid I wouldn't be taken seriously. I am probably going to go the turbo route. Because if I do get the kit I want the hood is designed for turbo so might as well have a turbo. Don't know how to weld but I am pretty sure I can find someone to teach me or do it for me. I don't have a lift but I am also pretty sure if I look hard enough someone is bound to help me with that. For now I just need to get some of the simple stuff fixed like my doors T-T When the engine does finally go out I am probably going to get a temp car like a Geo Metro while I get everything done. I am looking around for prices of what I need so I think I'll be able to set up a budget soon. My project wont actually begin till after Highschool (well aside for the front fender and doors and probably rear hatch)

The more I look into this the more I get excited about doing it =)
