I tried searching already
and got this error a bunch { Warning: Unknown modifier 'a' in /var/www/html/rx7club/forum/admin/functions.php on line 266 }
I don't really care about the error, but what I was wondering was, about the timing and octane.
I want to play with the timing but I have heard that you need to run a higher octane to avoid the pings.
any truth to this, also I have heard that 20* advance is the optimal setting.
I just don't want to do something then be like, "wow my car is fast" then PoP.
that would suck so I want to do it right.

To answer the question, yes, you need to run higher octane as a preventative measure when playing with the timing. But, it's REALLY hard to gain much with timing - it's really something that has to be done on a dyno. Just turning the crank angle sensor can give you a small amount, but not enough to worry about.
The 20 deg. advance thing is for people with aftermarket fuel injection systems and doesn't apply to stock EFI systems.
I'd save up and get a Super-AFC if you want something that you can do some tuning with - much better results than messing with the crank angle sensor.

Acctually timing can mak ea HUGE differance in power. The feeling of 17deg advance and 22deg advance in my Talon was ungodly. Throw in some race gas pump it to 29psi and hit up 27deg of advance, a good 50 - 75whp gain from pump gas settings. Obviously your gains will be proportional, so an NA RX7 won't get that much extra power, but timing control is a VERY important part of the equation.

Opinions are like........
I run my 'vert advanced. I haven't had any pinging/detonation problems with 89 octane and about 15 degrees advanced. It made a helluva power difference in my heavy vert plus my spark plugs stay cleaner, car starts instantly, and runs great(so far). I've notice that I don't shift as often as before because the car pulls better.
Also, my cooling system is in tiptop shape. I can sit in blistering heat/traffic without the gauge ever going over half. If you have ANY cooling issues, do NOT advance the timing. It is important that the additional heat that the engine creates has somewhere to go. The minor intake air temp drop caused by the throttle body mod is also recommended.
Advancing timing is risky with low octane fuel, is risky with tired motors, is risky with marginal cooling systems, and is really risky if you don't have $1800 for a rebuild in case you break something.
