i think my motor might be blown
i have a 1990 GTU, i got it around two years ago and has never been raced or abused and is very well maintained. today i changed the oil and replaced all gaskets for the Oil Metering Pump. then carefully put everything back together, cranked the car and it started smoking white clowds shaking very violently and died. started it again and it did the same thing. then it starts leaking coolant but i cant find where its coming from. im just a little scared that the engine might be blown. based on experience does anybody know what might be wrong????

This should not happen when unplugging the AFM. The engine does not run on the AFM during the first few seconds of start up. If the AFM was unplugged, the engine would rev up to about 3K and die.

I agree that the Afm has a delay, but what he describes is an unplugged afm. I suppose certian cars have their own issues but for the 7's that I worked on, if you forget to plug the afm back in and start it up it can still idle. It just doesn't idle well and it wants to die.

guys i feel so stupid right now. the AFM was unplugged.
By OMP gaskets i meant the rubber o-ring that goes between the pump and the block, the butterfly copper gasket and 4 copper o rings. thats it. this has been the second OMP i have redone and that car is still running.
well i still have the coolant leak and dont know where its comming from.
thanks guys you're the best

I do not believe you could have damaged the engine by not having the AFM hooked up. Describe the ticking noise as best you can. How loud is it? Where is it coming from? Does it increase/decrease with engine speed?
Does it only leak coolant when the car is running or all the time. I can't think of any coolant on the driver's side of the engine. Is it towards the front of the car on the driver's side? With the car cold, start it up and pull off the radiator cap. Look closely at the fluid and see if there are any bubbles floating up to the top. Make sure the car is cold when you do this, we don't want to burn you.
Get back to us.

well guys looks like the afm was the problem and the coolant leak was in fact the heater hose which runs from the firewall directly to the engine block.
iddled fine today and does not make that strange noise anymore. i'll see how it runs tomorrow when i drive to school. im gonna run her strong to see what happens. thanks for the help again guys
