I think my car hates me....

...two belts, one broken, the other fell off. Luckily, they were for the power steering pump and the a/c and not the water pump or alternator.

It's partly my fault though, the belts were incredibly ragged and really needed to be swapped out. I have the new ones in my trunk, and I tried to install them, but I couldn't get the bolts that hold on the fan loosened up. I think He-Man his-self tightened them.

So now I have no choice but to figure out some way to get them loose. I'd like to get a little torch down there and heat them up, but I'm afraid of melting the fan.

Two weeks ago it was a heater hose, now this. At least it's minor stuff, easy to deal with.

140k, with 40k on the engine. So it isn't too bad, except for a few traces of a shitty engine install that I've corrected or bandaided for the time being.

Car runs very strong, I just need to do a better job keeping an eye on the little stuff. Well, actually I have been keeping an eye on the little stuff, I knew that my belts had to be replaced pronto. I just wish those damn nuts would come off when I tried to change them in the first place.

I just have 86 and 87 models with air and no power steering. I never have to take the fan off to change belts. Whats the deal? My belts will slide b/t the blades and the shroud. Something here I do not understand. Also the nuts on the fan. Put a 10mm on the nut. Put a screwdriver between two of the other nutz to hold the fan stationary, and lossen the one your wrench is on. Do the same for the other three. On a 86 and 87 the fan does not have to come off. Your car?

DUDE! You don't have to take the fan off! Just work it over a blade at a time. Basically, you put it over one blade, and work the belt to the hub of the fan... then you can swing it around the rest of the blades. Easy!

I may be wrong on this..so if i am then forget it.

But why do u have to take your fan off to replace the belts?

I may be wrong like I said but it seems like you can just rought the belts around the fan. I just had a little fiasco with my alternator..my fault ..long story...it seemed like the belts would go around the fan no problem......now my curisoity has gone up, I gotta go look at my car...

Well after looking, you could do what I was saying. granted it would be a little bit harder..since you can't get the fan bolts off then I would try weaving them through the fan like I suggested.

Oh plus I work on industrial air compressors..some of them are belt driven so I have had to replace belts like the way i described to do the ones on your seven.

well hope that helps..later

You want to know the secret to getting the belts off the pulleys?

See the bolt on the front of each of the idler pulleys? Loosen it up, then take a socket to the 10mm bolts at the top that adjusts the idler pulleys. If you dont have belts on to hold the pulley stationary, take an old belt, put it on the pulley, and then clamp it together with vise-grips and hold the pulley with that.
