You can do a compression check without the AFM. If it has compression and the oil and water looks ok, I'd buy it.

OK, in that case you shouldn't buy it unless you can get it to work first. I realize that this is an RX-7 forum and you are probably looking for technical advice, but your financial and logistical situation always needs to be addressed when planning out a project. In your case, it wouldn't be very smart to give up your only good transportation in the hopes that the AFM is the only problem on that TII. It could also be that the engine is toast ($2,000), the transmission shot ($300-450), the clutch is slipping ($350-500), or any other number of problems. That's a pretty good price for a S5 TII assuming that the rest of the car is in good shape, but I don't think that it's worth the risk in your situation. Based on my experience with my 88 SE, I think that you will be much happier with a non-turbo RX-7 that you can drive vs. a TII that sits on jackstands. The idea is to own the car, rather than the car owning you. Your brother should have no problem selling it for that price.

I would also check the turbo out, take off the intake hose which runs from the airflow meter (you dont have one) to the turbo. Check for play and see if it smins without binding. Theres a slight chance that a thrown apex seal could have bent the exhaust turbine, and messed up things royally. Either way, you want a nice, tight, free spinning turbo.
