I Need Your Opinions...

Hey everyone.

Well, I've currently got an N/A 1986 RX-7 base model. It's got a big dent, some rust, interior needs to be redone more or less, and it's got a nasty oil leak, but it's probably just the main pulley bolt. I haven't really had alot of time to look at it. Needs a new rear caliper, and possibly a new clutch, which I was planning on getting anyways.

I love the car, but it's going to take lots of time and effor to get it to where I want it.

Here's where I need some opinions. I am going to be coming into about $2000 pretty soon, like within a month or 6 weeks. Now, I know that's not tons of money, but it is quite a bit to have at one time for me. I've decided I'm going to do one of two things with it.

I am going to either

A. Put the money into getting my N/A where I want it to be. More or less just back to original stock specs, then start working on it from there. Any money left over after 2 grand I'll put it into starting some mods. I had some basic stuff, like a header and muffler, but I sold it because I wasn't sure that I was going to keep the N/A.

or

B. Sell my N/A for whatever I can get out of it, put the other 2 grand and the money from the sale of the N/A together, and then save a few hundred more, and buy a TII. Probably an 89 or 90, but I wouldn't be too picky. I've seen a few TII's around here for right around 2500 bucks in really good shape, because idiots don't know what exactly it is that they have, so I don't think I'd have a problem finding one.

So, which do you guys think?? Get the N/A fixed up and probably get a few mods done to it, or get the TII and have to wait to do any mods??

Thanks guys.
Jeff

I say go with a TII, but I am biased. If you're lucky, you could go the vosko route and spend $500 on a series 5 and have plenty of repair/mod money left.

I say go for the TII.

What would you ask for your NA? If your motor is good, I might have a buyer for you.

JimmyV...

The engine runs strong, other than that oil leak it's been good since I got it. It doesn't seem to lose power through the power band, and I can put it sideways through first and second...like I said though, the front eccentric shaft oil seal might need to be replaced, or maybe just the washer under the main pulley bolt.

I'd ask about $700 bucks for it...

I'm really just looking for a motor to break open and port. $700 is too much for me.

Ride in a TII with upgraded suspension and 9-10psi boost and you'll make your decision pretty easily...

I say go n/a, but TII is faster.....unless you get a cheap n/a with a solid engine and a nice supercharger on it, that is!!

Sell the car, pool your cash....

I just found a 1990 GXL LOADED and completely functional, (Although the dealer didnt know this) for $1700!!!

Theres a TII somewhere out there in a similar way.

Start a nationwide search on the Autotrader site, save it as a favorite.

Its cheap to ship a car.

Across the country onyl costs about $500-$600 if you shop carefully.

The chances of finding a TII car to your liking are high.

The time you'll wait for the car most likely will be less than the time it would take to fix your car to the level you want.

And youll save money like a fiend until that day.... right?

Good point, and thanks Sniper. You're right, by the time I did find a TII to my liking, I would probably have quite a chunk of change to spend on it, and possibly some quick mods to it even...That's probably what I'll go for then, sell mine and pocket cash for a good while till I find one that is just calling my name....

Thanks,
Jeff

i would say look on the internet, but, i got my *** kicked on Ebay with my car. I payed 3800 (quiet down now, no laughter) for a 1988GTU with 63K and i thought it was in great shape, it gets to my door and the paint is faded and spray painted in spots to cover up the fading. The oil cooler lines are leaking, and im sure you have heard the motor blew with 67K on it. Try to find something not on the internet first. Im sure with even just 2000 you can find a running TII, hell, my freind found one that ran for 400bucks! Keep your car, and slowly work on it, and find a TII. thats what i would try to do. Hope this helps you out man,

noticed you need some modification on your car in the future. I live in the Lansing area and go to L.C.C College and am working on cars now that need some work done. Maybe we can get together, because I have a 91 RX-7 and am looking for a good mechanic.. drop me a line or leave me an email at ChinoXL@aol.com. Thanks. Name is Eric
