I Need Power Steering help?

Hi

I did a search and didnt really find anything on how to install power steering to an 86 base. mainly just people putting eachother down for wanting powersteering in there car. Reason i need power steering is because i drift and drifting you need the quick response steering. Im not quite buff enough if you know what im saying, for manuel steering rack. So im wondering if i can add power steering to my 86 Base (car was bought in 85) and if there is a write up on how to do it, it would be greatly appreciated if you could direct me to it.

Thank you,
Mike

Learn how to drive the car first.
...then start drifting.
You're going to end up piling the thing up into a rail, post, lamp, etc.

Then why do you *need* power steering?
The NA's have like...what...195 wide tires?

Ted, your missing the point. He made it very obvious that he didnt want your opinion as if you think he NEEDS PS or not. He just wants to know if its possible for his car to have PS. And if its possible, how to do it.

i honestly dont think so, or at least, not for me. i have no PS on mine, and i love the way it feels, yes a lil more effort is required, but you can "feel" the road more IMO w/ out the steering assist. some people argue, but i think it feels better with no PS. besides as long as the car is moving you should have no trouble turing, and im a small guy too, so i know.

wow... out of 11 post ONE had answers! The man asked for answers... not opinons.... post ******... Anyways, if an FC ever came with P/S that wasnt speed controlled or RPM controlled then you wont need the computer or wiring. If not then this swap will be very difficult requiring you rewire or swap wireing harnesses. If you go the way of the motor swap then it should be 112% easier because of the new harness and having the motor out will gain you EASY access to the rack. Good luck either way.

Talk about bogus post ***** stuff....

Not one FC came with power steering that was not engine speed or vehicle speed based, unless it was a manual rack.

why even answer if you don't know about the car and just want to slam the answers already there???

Im not slaming anyones answers... just the lack there of. I answered his question to the best of my ability (even though Im not all knowing like some), which is more than some people did. All Im trying to say is cut the opinon stuff... I dont think he should either... but does that matter? no... It all boils down to one thing.

If you want power steering w/o a swap then be ready for some serious wireing wohs.

If you want power steering with a swap then the road will be MUCH easier (donor car/front clip will be the best solution)

And thats my answer... not my opinon.

ok well I am about to do the same thing. I have everything except the wiring, cpu (which I won't use) and I still need to find a ps rack. Anyways, just put in the ps rack, and the pump, lines etc. you don't need the cpu, and if you just let it run like that in "limp mode" it will just have it so 60% (i think) of the assist is always there, and thats all the assist you should need. I drove in a car without its ps cpu, and the assist was good enough. if you are good with wiring, then you can try and do it, but I hate wiring.

Let me just say WOW... Something needs to be said here and I hope it doesn't get deleted (moderated) because that would mean this whole site is crap. First of all I don't know the answer to what you need to change over a base to have PS. Secondly I'm posting because I would ALSO like to know this answer and also where to get these parts but,

OK, Moderators please answer the man's questions if you know them. He already said he searched. He was polite and even said that he knew that he tried the regular steering and wanted to change it. He didn't get out of line or call anybody names or even say anything stupid. The man knows what he wants and was wondering if someone could direct him to the answer. Not question his preferences.

Posters who don't know or don't care about the subject should keep their oppinions to themselves whether he "needs power steering" or not. Pursuing it after the fact that he stated he knew what he was getting into are ridiculous for someone who has more 18,000 posts.

I have had a 90 GXL and have just bought an 87 turbo and I greatly enjoyed having PS in the GXL so I would like to add PS to the T2 if I could. I have done my fair share of drifting and regular driving and I would say that my enjoyment of the car overall is greatly magnified with power steering. I would also say that being a drifter and having driven with PS and without I can say that I now require that my T2 has PS because it is that big of a difference. When you have one hand on the shifter and the other on the wheel you may need to make a correction in a corner that requires added effort that may not be possible without PS. So I would definitely say his queries are intelligent and justified if only for the need of greater response while drifting.

Thank you and good luck Mike.

Thank you for calling the whole site "crap".

You don't have a clue what you're talking about.
See below...

You don't know what you're talking about.
You have a problem with me, send me a PM.

Also, this is an open and public forum.
As long as the site rules are not violated, comments are opinions are valid no matter how much YOU don't like them.
Please stop pushing your agenda - we'd like differing opinions, especially from those who know what they are talking about.

I have had a 90 GXL and have just bought an 87 turbo and I greatly enjoyed having PS in the GXL so I would like to add PS to the T2 if I could.
This is your own personal preference.
Please don't assume everyone else thinks this way.
I sure don't.
I prefer non-PS for my FC anyday.

I have done my fair share of drifting and regular driving and I would say that my enjoyment of the car overall is greatly magnified with power steering.
I think we can correct your statement as being "I have *tried* my fair share or drifting..."

I would also say that being a drifter and having driven with PS and without I can say that I now require that my T2 has PS because it is that big of a difference.
First of all, you're not a drifter.
Second of all, added steering angle is more important in an FC3S versus having PS.
This implies you have no idea what you're talking about.

When you have one hand on the shifter and the other on the wheel you may need to make a correction in a corner that requires added effort that may not be possible without PS. So I would definitely say his queries are intelligent and justified if only for the need of greater response while drifting.
This just confirmed you have no idea what you're talking about.
Just to give you a clue, you do NOT leave your hand on the shifter - duh.

Please don't add anything unless you know what you're talking about.
If you got a rant against ME, please send ME a PM.
Stop dirtying this thread with your unnecessary comments that are OT.

IMHO PS is overrated, im a very small guy (muscularly) and i have no problems. You just need to learn to be a little qucker on the wheel. Look at Teds website, he has some very very good information about geting your stearing angle to increase. Guys like Icemark and RETed know their FC's you should at least try to listen when they talk.

It's funny how you rant about other people and then say, "If you got a rant against ME, please send ME a PM."

Oh and the fact still stands that I have sent you two PM's before all this which neither you haven't answered me on, and probably still won't answer me.

Secondly I'm glad you like to drag this quibbling out when you could just answer the man's question but instead you choose to argue over things that since you personally seem to know me so well than you can say them about me.

My Rx-7 In The PIKES PEAK DRIFTOFF.

https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...6&page=1&pp=15

It's the second link (the PutFile one). Mines the white one. Oh and this is my first driftoff with my 1990 GXL so i've gotten way better than this.

Thanks, and back to answering this man's question since I share his affinity for PS.

What do you need in total to run PS in order to put it in a base model or in my case a 87 Turbo?
I've heard you only need

P/S steering rack
P/S pump, bracket, resivour and lines
P/S oil cooler
P/S computer in drive side kick panel

But are these the only things you need? Not to thread Jack but would I need the PS computer in my T2?

Thanks for answers.

I don't answer questions, questions that are long and drawn out, or if you posted it publically at the same time.
Which one was yours?

Hmmm...and you point is?

Yeah, you're just a kid with a chip on your shoulder.
Unless you suddenly turned into Takumi Fujiwara, you aren't that very good.
I'm sorry, but I won't sugarcoat it like some of the guys did in the other thread.
The video shows that your lines are off, and you did about as good as what I'd expect from someone who is trying to drift an underpower NA.

This is what we do...
http://fc3spro.com/PROJECTS/SKY/20B/VIDEO/sweeper01.avi
Notice, we drift on a track with GUARD RAILS.
This is who we hang out with at the track...

Enjoy the vids.

But are these the only things you need? Not to thread Jack but would I need the PS computer in my T2?
We end up cutting the wires off the PS pump - you don't necessarily need the computer.

First I was just wondering (maybe yours or my PM system is busted or maybe you were ignoring me) do you still make custom TID's for people, I'm in great need for one and I didn't want to PM for the fact that you never answered my other PM's. On another note, was that you in that rx-7 or was that someone else? You said we. Yeah, I was pretty green back then and underpowered, hence the purchase of a turbo 2.

You also said you cut the wires off the PS pump. Are you saying that you cut the wires so you use the pump directly without help from the CPU to tell it to go 100% when you are stopped and ~60% when moving? So you are pretty much just constantly running "In limp mode" ~60% so you can go without touching anything electrical and you don't have to rewire the whole system? How do you know if it is wired and already has the CPU meaning someone just took the P/S off or tell if the original owner just opted to not have P/S?

Also thanks for giving an answer to the problem at hand RETed, I knew you knew the answer.

If you were the guy that was asking for the BOV fitting back to the TID, then that was the reason why I haven't answered your PM - I don't do recirculating BOV fittings back into the TID, cause that would basically double the cost of the TID itself from my end of things!

I've got several PM's from people asking about TID's, but I'm trying to source out that stupid 1/4" or 6mm emission fittings for those who need it - even on eBay, I can't find them. :P This is what's holding me up from producing them.

All it is is a 45-degree aluminum pipe (you can get them off eBay for cheap - I used to source them from a wholesaler that bumped his price from $20 a pipe to $50 a pipe!). This is why I dropped the idea of making them, cause this would easily push the price over $100 for you guys - to me it wasn't worth it.

On another note, was that you in that rx-7 or was that someone else? You said we.
I don't own the car.
I own the engine.
I own the Haltech E6K that controls the engine.
I do all the tuning on the Haltech on that car...for free / sponsored.
The turbos that are on order, I'm paying for...$3,500 worth. :P
I help the guy out with track-side tech if anything goes wrong.

Honestly, I cannot give you an answer for this.
The owner of the car did this, and I was just looking at his "handywork".
Yeah, the wires are just cut off the top of the PS - not connected to anything.
It is a full Turbo II PS system though, and I think it just basically runs as an engine / RPM dependent set-up now.
The owner says it works fine like that.
I dunno how much of a PS boost it gives, but it does work without the PS computer no problem.
I'd imagine the NA PS system should work similarly.

Thank you very much RETed for telling us what you know about it all this. I'm sorry you don't make those TID's anymore. I guess I'll have to just put something together myself.

I still need to know how you tell if your car ever had power steering or not.

Oh and my sincere apologies to Mike the starter of this thread. I didn't mean to make this my thread. He should chime in every once in a while and I wouldn't feel so bad. Maybe he already found his answer. If not it would still be nice if someone would post a guide of installing P/S into your car. The FSM isn't that detailed.

Shoot, I had my PS disconnected on my TII for a while, and I just hooked it back up a couple hundred miles ago.

I frikkin' LOVE power-steering... The car feels SO much more nimble and agile. I was a semi-advocate for non power-steering, but not anymore.

Granted, there is more 'road-feel' without power-steering, it's ANNOYING to have to 'hold' the car in the right direction when you're taking a hard, sweeping turn.

I'd rather listen to my wheels, feel the back-end and focus on my direction--while using as little hand-movement as possible, when I'm taking a turn...

Then again, it's all personal. And I do think that drifting is made a little easier with power steering... But then again, it seems like steering is easy and quick when in mid-drift (without power-steering)... Huh... I think my problem without power-steering is mainly in tight, or hard/sweeping turns.

Sorry to the original poster, I've never done the swap...

Have you searched? (lol)

Edit: I will say, that one of the down-sides of non-Infini or GTUs power-steering, is that it's speed-sensing and not RPM sensitive. I don't quite know how it all works, but I will tell you that in speeds of excess of 100mph, it get's a *little* weird feeling.
