I started off with a Protege 5 wagon. Then I bought the seven. The good thing is I have a DD for when I have to do anything on the 7. I'd say, get a fuel efficient beater DD. Then, when you've got the time and money buy a good running 7. If/when you need to do any reliabilty mods, you'll have a DD to lean on while the 7 is getting fixed.

I am the 3rd owner of my NA FC and it has ~260,000 miles on the original engine. No rebuilds. I've had to change the radiator, oil cooler lines, coil packs, drive shaft, sunroof motor, and rear hatch shocks. Car still runs great and I've been slowly modding it. My plan: to keep it running good and reliably, and when I finish my degree I'll either swap in a turbo II or 20B (nursing pays big bucks these days).

So the FC is a good car, but for now, be patient and get a fuel efficient DD, save some money up and if you still want an FC, get your money's worth. It will surely save you tons of headaches in the future. Good luck bro. Cheers!

Forgot to mention, the stock NA FC gets pretty good gas milage. Not a whole lot of torque or power, but gas is cool.

I say get the 240. 4 cyl.= better gas mileage than a rotary. Save for a TII and then keep both.

Don't forget the 80's V6 Nissan S12's (200sx here in the states)

www.kbb.com (Kelly Blue Book) will give you the average selling price of any car you want. A good NA RX-7 that won't cost you a small fortune to repair goes for around $4500 now.

RX-7's are very reliable if you get the right one. Especially NA's. They can be a total P.O.S. if you get a bad, neglected one, but that goes for any old car. Try the buyer's guides in this forums FAQ or google. You can also have a mechanic check it out before you buy, for extra peace of mind. Come to think of it, do this for any car you choose; not just the RX-7.

RX-7's are good drift cars but not very good for beginning drifters. Plus people like me will hate you if you crash one.

As for money, expect to pay at least $0.20 per mile on any car you get (maintenance, gas, etc., etc.), or up to $0.75 or more per mile. That can easily come to a couple hundred or more per month. Insurance and purchase price are more on top of that. Don't skrimp on it when buying or doing standard maintenance or repairs, or you'll pay far more in the long run. Figure out how much you'll be using it, how much insurance will cost and what the blue book is before you buy. Also consider a car loan if you need a ride soon (and check payment amounts and interest rates). Don't buy a cheap P.O.S., end up with problems you can't afford to fix, then have your car die on you. If you can't afford a car, don't buy one.

Exception to that might be lien sale auction. You can get a car taken from the previous owner which means it was still running at least and he has no secret reason for selling. Yet at the same time he wasn't willing to pay to recover it, so at the very least it'll be butt ugly, etc. Anyway those cars are only $200-$700, so it's not such a bad risk to take. Just don't be reluctant to spend more than the car cost you to fix it up. And don't spend any money on body work, that's where these cars will be a money pit. My first RX-7 was $600 at lien sale ($380 + registration + smog + etc.), a total mess, but it ran great.
