I made my blue door panels black

well seeing as im snowed in i decided to work on my car. i have been gathering all the stuff to do this for a month or so but hadnt gotten around to it.

what i needed:
black automotive carpet - 1 square yard is more than enough
2 cans of duplicolor fabric & vinyl dye - one can would be enough thogh
1 yard of speaker fabric - way more than enough
2 yards of black fabric - 1 might be enough but i got 2 just incase i messed up
1 can 3m general trim adhiesive

the black fabric you can get at any fabric store and its pretty easy to match the original stuff to the new fabric. the paint you can get at wali-world (walmart) or automovie store. and the carpet you can get at a distributor or at an auto upolstery shop. you can also get the trim adhisive at most of the above places aswell.

if anyone wants me to write more on how to do it let me know. and sorry for the back pic quality i only have a camera phone.

that's not bad at all. nice job. i used dupl-i-color or kolor-rite (you get it at pepboys) to do my triangle vents and rear speaker covers.

if anyone plans on doing this, make sure you clean (warm water + little soap) to get the dirt, grime, grease and oil off of the thing you want to paint. you'll know where you missed because it'll look like the paint hit a patch of water and will look runny and watery. oh and spray in the garage or outside .. that stuff from pepboys stinks so bad it's not funny.

nice job

I know the feeling, man, I know the feeling. And again, nice job on the color change, looks like it came out good, but if you had a BETTER CAMERA (hint hint) we could see it better.

yea i would like more information on this. I have a blue rex with blue interior. I dont mind the blue interior but black would look so much better. But i wonder how much it would cost to do the "whole" interior of the car

well obviously to start you take your door panel off. once you have it off if you look at the back everything except one spot is scewed together. the one spot is this little washer peice that bites into a a plastic post on the back of the armrest. just take everything that you can apart. that includes both vents, armrest everything. once you have all the pieces apart clean all the parts you are going to paint with soap and water.

the parts that you arent going to paint are going to be the center piece and the speaker cover if you have it.

the carpet on the bottom of the door panel with come off easily with a little tugging. the fabric on the speaker cover also comes off really easily. the fabric on the center piece is a little different though. if its in good condition without any rips or tears i suggest leaving it on there. reason being is that it has a very thin very well glued down foam backing and would just be a nightmare to get it all off. plus i dont know what kind of foam it is.

once i had all that done i laid down a tarp and laid out all the vinyl and plastic pieces. the duplicolor paint goes on really easily, just spray paint it like you would anything else making sure you dont put it on too thick or itll run. i gave everything about 3 coats. a plus about the paint is that it dries really fast as opposed to reagular spray paint. within 10 min i could pick everything up, although while they were drying i worked on the cloth parts.

after painting the first thing i did was reskin the speaker grill. i just took the metal piece and laid it on the speaker cloth and cut out about 3 inches all around it. once i did that i took the the metal part and sprayed it lightly with the trim adheisive along with the back of the speaker cloth. be careful with spraying the cloth because if you spray too much on it will blead threw. after letting the adheisive tack up for about 10 minutes i took the metal piece and laid it gently on the back of the fabric. then i could pick up the metal piece and flip it over. and smooth out the fabric on the front of it. then i flipped it back over and sprayed the edges of the metal piece about half a centermeter into the center. after that i folded the fabirc up and pulled it a little tight to make sure it was smooth on the edges and were contacting the metal completely. after that you smooth it on the back you cut away all the extra material. be careful on the edges that you dont get any bubbles thick creases. if you are getting a crease you can cut down the center of the crease and pull the fabric over and cut off the extra material.

now that the easy piece was done i worked on the center piece.

and on this one i left the old fabric because it was on there very good still. once i cut a piece of fabric to the size of the center panel with about 3 inches extra all around i sprayed the fabric part with the glue and the back of the new fabric. after letting it tack up i picked up the fabric and set it gently on the center panel. when you pick up the fabric dont let it touch itself because it will get stuck to its self. once its set gently on the panel i started at one end gently pressing down smoothing out the fabric. to get any creases or wrinkles out you pull the on the fabric that isnt laid down yet. once you have the whole panel smoothed out you flip it over and in like 2 places fold it over and glue it in the same places as the original. you fold it over just like you did on the speaker piece. once thats done cut the extra fabric off.

now after you have painted the pieces that will be seen on the bottom plastic piece its time to put the carpet on it.

when you originally pulled off the old carpet you may have noticed that the carpet was tucked under the little plastic lip. to do this you start at one end with a new piece of carpet and tuck it in at one corner. then you lay it on the plastic all the way down and then tuck the other end in. once both ends are in you can take a thin putty knife and aply pressure to it so it bends and also grips on the carpet. you just slide the carpet and knife up into the lip working from one end to the other. once its all tucked under fold the carpet up and over so you can see the back side and the plastic. spray both the carpet and the plastic. you are going to want to use more glue here on both pieces than on the fabric, but be careful because the glue can blead through the carpet if you go crazy with it. once the glue is tacky fold the carpet back over and smooth it out. then flip it over and do the edges just like the other pieces. on the back you want about half of an inch of extra carpet to be glued over. once its glued there cut off the extra.

now the only thing to do is put the door panel back together and put it on the car! i suggest doing one door panel at a time starting with the passanger side. reason for this is if you screw up, its on the passanger side and most people never look over there. also there are quite a few of screws on the back of the panel and its easier to put it back together if you have another one to look at. also with the glue its a contact glue. meaning if you spray it on something and let it dry it wont stick to anything that doesnt have glue, but if you spray 2 things and let them dry they wont be sticky to the touch but will stick very well to each other.

anymore questions let me know!

also ill get a camera from one of my relatives to take better pics.

and for cost to convert the whole car:
3-4 cans of paint $3.99 each
headliner material $10 a yard
door fabric $10
door parpet $17
3 cans 3m trim adhiesive $10 each

other carpet varries.
