I hope it's not the engine.

Here's the story of how my car (88 rx7 13b non turbo) broke down.

2 days ago I replaced the slave and master cylinder for the clutch since it just sank to the floor. Worked fine that day and the next.

Was running late for work today and was low on gas but I thought I could make it. It's about 15 miles away and around 13 miles I noticed my car was losing power. So I went to 4th gear but as I put the clutch down the rpms dropped to 0. I was still going pretty fast so I just threw it in 4th and and it started back up again. I tested what the hell happened and put it in neutral. The light check came on and rpms went to 0. So through it back in 4th and every stop i stalled out unless i kept the gas up. Made it the last 2 miles.

Got out early. Turned to the car on and the rpms go up and then drop. Figured...must be gas (but no gas warning light came on and it does work), so I go get some in a can and bring it back. First try, same thing. 2nd try it reved to 3k like normal and idled at around 1k. Thought it was good to go but still made a clanking noise when i turned it on. Started driving and there was lots of white smoke. Made it to a gas station put a couple more gallons no luck.

My car has a slight oil leak so i through 2 quarts in just incase, still same thing.

Clanking noise when starting, sounds terrible when giving it gas, and shuts off if i dont give it gas. Progessively gets harder to keep on by giving gas. Another noteable thing is it looks like the whole area under the hood is covered with a black film..possibly oil?? I have no clue whats up with that but its been like that for a while.

I tried to give as much info as I can cause i know it must be hard to diagnose from a post. Any help would be great though.

Had no real problems with my car before the slave cylinder got boned not to long ago. So any ideas?

A few people had suggestions but know nothing about rotary (and i know less) so here's what they think:

Fuel pump went bad since i had no gas.
Fuel Filter clogged
Throttle body needs adjustment.

Hope its not the engine and which ever is cheapest is what wishing for.
