I Have the Worlds Fastest least Mod 2nd gen
You know, it's this kind of speculative crap that really pisses me off. I'm really sick of "the experts" and their less-than-substantial opinions about "he didn't do that", or "you can't do that", or "there's no way".
First off, although I was a bit skeptical at first, after the original poster posted his second time slip, I was convinced that he actually did it. Once he posted some more detail about the car, we find out it's not as "NO MODS AT ALL" as being sold. Those times are possible: Notice the difference in the 1/4mi ET compared to the older but the almost no change with the 1/8mi and 1/4mi traps. They're almost the same. The .3sec change in the 60' time suggests this is factual.
Secondly, nobody has any right in the world to try and rip on Jeff Hurst. He was doing this stuff over four years ago before 75% of you guys on these forums had these cars or knew what a rotary engine was. He's from the old-school crowd that was wow'ing audiences and crowds with his whole-lot-less modified FC back in the day when there weren't T78 kits, E6K's installed on 40 FC's, tonnes of FD's with modified parts, or loads and loads of 10-second cars zipping around on the streets. Jeff's driving skills are highly respected by the likes of people like me who have been around to see these things happen. He's also got a technical prowess that would challenge most everyone on here and defeat.
If any of you guys think certain mods or combinations are impossible, I dare you to actually go and try them. Me? I have. I've also done "the impossible" in my time, making an unpinned 1987 hodge-podged block w/ a 60-1 HIFI and a modified, stock air-to-air intercooler (jacketted and converted to an air-to-water unit) land almost 425hp to the wheels at 16lbs of boost on pump gas, making the car, on drag radials, almost land 100mph in the 1/8 mi, on a daily-driven car. For you so-called "experts", it's impossible, but it happened, and happened multiple times.
Keep your minds open.

well only speaking for my self, I do belive

I just dont see how can you get 10PSI
with stock exhaust and cats and TID
and no boost controller
before my exhaust I boosted only to 6psi
BTW My run was video recorded
i have to get my friend to make a avi of it

In any case, I think it's possible, especially in the colder weather. You'd be surprised what these things will do, especially when they're launched properly.

Hey Brian...How ya been?!!?
I did have a boost controller, I experimented with manual controllers and also a profec A. I had the profec A running at the time with the stock exhaust. The superchip removed the boost cut. The factory cutout on an 87-88 ecu is about 8.5psi. Once I got the IC, at the track I just ran the turbo full out with the wastegate line disconnected.
I really didn't want to turn this into an argurment. I just wanted point out that these cars do have a lot of potential when running right and that there are and were a lot of cars just as fast with the same mods. GXL's are lighter too. An NA drivetrain saves weight. It's just too bad that there arent' many of them left any more. Kabooski keep on representing!!

Ok, I had to chime in here. These are my mods.
DP
MP
Home Depot TID
Cone Filter
Paul's FCD
Stock Catback- I bought an Apexi N1 since.
POS Centerforce Clutch
I creep to 10 psi in 4th
225x45 17 Kumho's
13.31 @ 103.92, I'm sure not the fastest least modded but gotta be close.

I almost bought a tenth ann. that ran a 12.7 with the stock turbo.
He had a npr intercooler, and some other **** I think. But its true, I even saw video footage. Any know Crispeed? Apparantley the motor was built by him.

considering power adders
which HD clutch aint
you got me beat... for now

I'm installing a HD clutch this week
and some better tires
I'll be racing this coming sunday @ the battle of the imports
here in orlando
we'll see how it goes
Here are my results.
88 TII:
Stock block
stock intercooler
91 stock turbo
Racing Beat 3" turbo back exhaust
Fuel Cut Defensor
720cc secondaries
Profec B at 13 lbs
BALD *** 245 pep boys specials
Home Depot intake (this is a BIG power mod for the $ if you haven't done it yet)
Air filter
ABSOLUTLY NO ECU/FUEL upgrades other than FCD and 720cc's - UNTUNED
centerforce dual friction clutch
Time:
13.31 @ 104.5
60' = 1.88
I totally beleive that the 88 turbo can go 12's I woulda done it, but I don't think the 90 style turbo pulls nearly as hard on top since it just spools quicker but falls off after about 6k. And if you ran without the hose on the turbo I can't believe the motor didn't go.

Well I have a 10th ann with just a k&n filter (6 psi). Street tires, full weight, 1/2 gas. Ran a 14.7@98.5 with a 2.4 60ft. I'm expecting 14.0 maybe even a 13.9 when I launch it better and a little quicker shifts. I'll let you know how it goes with a full exhaust and a fuel pump
i hardly think a ported motor with a TEC II really qualifies as lightly modded .............but at any rate.
i remember Jeff Card posting time slips and whatnot a while back of his runs. i think his best was a 13.6 @101 or 2 not sure. anyway, his mods were: TID, nitto 555Rs, and he took off the AC and PS belts. nothing else was done to the car, i think the short time was 1.8. he was running an otherwise stock 1990 TII. i think his goal was to get the car into the 12s running a full stock exhaust cats and all. last i heard he clogged a cat and blew the motor supposedly.
im kinda anxious to get mine to the track, but i dont suppose id consider my car "lightly" modded. (T60-1, E6K, 550/1600cc's, etc etc)

I noticed you have 720's w/out any modded ecu or add on. Does it run way too rich in the mid range? Does it bog or have dead spots when they come on at 3800rpms? W/ my new N1 catback I'm creeping to 14.5psi on the highway. I have a deal on some 720's but don't have the money for any computer mods yet. What do you think?
Scott
Welll, I don't think you should be creeping just from exhaust. 14.5 is pretty damn high for no boost control. Check the hoses going to the turbo actuator and intake manifold. Actually just replace it if its over a few years old. It might have a pinhole that could cause a creep like that. You should port the wastegate to eliminate it if its not a bad hose. Yeah the 720's stuttered a bit in the middle when the boost comes on, but It it kinda compensates because the 90 turbo spikes so high right there. It also shoots flames like a ****. (I have had it go for about 6 seconds on the interstate a constant 7' stream from both pipes!!)
I got my 245's for free from my roomate. I don't own the car anymore, but I'm about to buy another TII this week. Had to sell my bad boy when I got married and had a baby. But I just got more money saved so here I come all over again.
If you guys want me to put together a mod list of cheap yet effective mods I can do that.

The WG is hooked straight to the factory nipple on the short IC pipe w/ new hose, just like factory '88 so I know my wastegate is getting the full boost signal. It just can't keep up w/ the increased boost. I never dreamed I'd need to port the '91 wastegate when I put it on after seeing my tiny stock '88 WG hole. I was fine till I put the N1 on. It'd only creep to 10.5psi max before. I guess my stock catback was pretty restrictive. Makes me wonder what I'll run now. heheScott

And a full 3 inch exhaust, which anyone could say is better than a 2.5 dp/mp and stock cat back...

Yeah, it's boost creep all right and I have a '91 turbo w/ the better wastegate. This combined w/ my custom TID really opens things up. I also have 2 Boost guages on it, an HKS and an Autometer. I couldn't believe the boost either.

Well, with the 90 style turbo I don't really find it hard to believe that you are creeping, but 14 lbs just seems too high to me. Where do you have the wastegate line attatched?? It should be on the turbo compressor. I have found that the 90 style wastegate/turbine setup has too fast of a spool up and builds too much pressure on top, causing a hard spike at about 5500 rpms (right?). I just don't see how that your car creeps so hard. For mine to creep that bad on a 90 style housing I had to put an H3 compressor and T04B housing on my stock 91 turbo/turbine to make it creep to 14-15 lbs. My car was pretty damn opened up (as much as you can get it). With a 3" intake pipe about 4 inches long with only a 45 degree mandrel bend in it. Also I had no Secondary butterflies in the throttle body, and also the FULL 3" turbo-back exhaust. On top of that I also put a Greddy intercooler (only lowered boost a little) but it would creep like that (should with a huge compressor on it).
Here's my plan for the new car though until I get a good enough deal on a T04 60-1 and manifold: I am gonna use my stock turbo that has a V-trim wheel fitted in a machined stock compressor housing. I am also gonna port the **** outta the wastegate and turbine inlet and also machine a MUCH bigger flapper door (30-35mm -- whatever will fit). If anyone wants me to do the flapper door mod I might do a couple more for a few $$$. It'll have to wait until the end of the semester, but I could probably do it then. well I gotta run.

How do you get 9lbs of boost with no FCD?
That's interesting, I would not have thought that the IC would clear he NA hood. Did you need to modify anything, or does it fit as-is?

My line is attached at the factory nipple on the turbo. Sounds like we have the same TID. I don't know how but I'm for sure hitting 14.5 psi in fourth now if I roll it on, on the highway. Through the 1/4 I barely hit 10.5 in 4th.
