I have a transmission installation problem as well as a turn signal problem
hello i'm new to the forum i just joined last month. anyways i just purchased an 87 gxl and i kinda got a little wreckless with it and blew the tranny. newbie mistake i guess you can call it but anyway i when i purchased the car i ended up getting a spare tranny with it and i was wondering how hard it would be to swap the tranny myself and if i had a mechanic do it how much do you think installation would cost. Also my turn signal switch won't light up my turn signals but when i put my hazard lights on my turnsignals flash just fine. So any ideas. Anything you guys give me would be a great help and i would really appreciate it. Thanks for your time guys

Its easy..... Think of it this way... your time is free.. Garages charge $50 or more an hour for labor (i've seen 100+) and just because is a 7, they may want to **** about the rate.
You will need a VERY long... like 18-24 inch extension and a 14mm swivel socket (I'm pretty sure its 14mm). this makes it MUCH easier to get the tranny bolts out all from under the car. Get the craftsman stuff, don't cheap out. I find that a 6-point socket is preferable casue your less likely to round the bolt off.
buy these tools, they will come in handy for all sorts of other stuff later!!!!
Removal and installation of the tranny on a 7 is one of the easier things you can do!!!
Also, drain the tranny before taking it out and put a rubber glove over the ouotput end or you may get an oil bath.
Get the Flywheel holder tool for your car from Mazdatrix (this will come in handy later) and check out your clutch while you are at it (you might as well since the tranny is going to be out anyway!!)

I agree with YearsOfDecay it is very easy, the hardest part that I encountered was getting it lined back up the the engine. Dont forget to drain the tranny fluid first. That was another mistake that I made. (got covered in oil not very fun) YOu should definitly invest in the tools that he mentions because they come in handy it makes the job alot eaiser,

Having a spare drive shaft yoke to stick in the back of the tranny makes it even easier to aviod getting the old oil bath!!!! Sadly, the Yoke from my Fairlane doesn't fit on the RX-7 !!!!

Check the switch inside the dash. I bought an extra dash because my rear whiper wasn't working..
So i figured it was the switch.
I put it in and the signals didn't work now. So i took it out, replaced the signal switch with my old one and now everything works.
