I got the overheated engine to fire up

indeed i did, had to boost my batt tho the cold killed it

and then i needed coolant , so i shut the car off, mixed some up- put it in.

bout 10-15 min after i shut it off.....

the batt is dead....

is this a short, or lack of a good alternator.

Your alternator wouldn't charge the battery after only running it for a few minutes. No alternator would, they don't charge that much. You'd almost have to run the motor for 24 hours to have the alternator completely charge the battery.

Put a charger on the battery if you don't want to have to jump it every time you want to start the motor.
