i was driving and.......WHOA

Alright heres what happened:

after school i decide to head out to mazda to see if they have an interior strip (the long black strip that covers the moving seat belt track) for my car, and they do but it is $60.42, but anyway back to my story.

im driving down a road with the speed limit of like 40 or so and im only going about 45. anyway i just bought my black 90 gxl about a week ago so i really havent gotten to drive it hard and test the handling, but i decide to take the upcoming 90 degree turn pretty quickly. i click the AAS to sport supsension (even though im not sure if the AAS works, but the thought counts) and i take the left turn at about 35 (could have done it quicker) but i didnt since I still dont know the car that well.

as i am taking the turn something really odd yet funny happened. halfway through the turn I hear a little jingle, and im thinking wtf was that??? I look down once im on the straight and my KEYS ARE ON MY FLOORMAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ok i see this as kind of odd because im almost positive keys arent supposed to fall out on purpose, but that was pretty funny. The car was still running and i drove it all the way to mazda before putting the key back in because i didnt want to mess with it while i was driving. at mazda the key went back in easily then i shut the car off and everything was back to normal again and it hasnt done it since.

anyway all i have on my keychain is two mazda keys on a little keyring, and overall it weighs practically nothing. its not like i have one of those keychains with a million things on it weighing like 5 pounds just hanging from the ignition.

im not that concerned because its normal now but i am just wondering why the heck did the key just slide out while i was taking that corner?

maybe my rex was a little confused who knows, but i just thought i would share that bizarre moment.

Simple - old age and "1 key fits them all".

I used to pull the key out of my '85 GLC (R.I.P.) and lock the door *WITH IT STILL RUNNING" to run into the convience store for a deck of smokes.

It'll freak the **** out of you, but the locks and ignition will still need a (well, a close enough) key to work. You'd have to get a locksmith or call Mazdatrix for a new set of locks if it's a problem.

I would have freaked out if that happened to me. I've had my key get stuck in the door handle before.

It will be worst with some time, the key won't unlock the ignition....so replace it as soon as possible or you will kick yourself in the butt (and probably remember this advice too) in the near future.

Yeah, Mazda has a weak *** lock system.

The falling-out problem can be fixed, usually, with a new key cut from the code, not just a copy of the worn-down one you have. It will be a little rough at first, but will get easier with time. Most locksmiths can cut the new key for you if you have the code. The dealer can pull the key code from the VIN, if it is still the original lock set.

Periodic lubrication of all the locks will melp them last a lot longer.

Its a definite plus. You can start one car to let it idle, and without taking the key off the ring or turning the car off, get out and start and move your other car. Nothing but a plus. Mazda engeneering at its finest.

If you don't want to shell out the extra $$$ for a key cut from code, getting a copy made worked for me.

My key falling out was so bad that just the key itself would fly out of the ignition in the middle of autocrossing. One time it took me 5 minutes of hunting the the interior to find the key (engine running the whole time). I eventually found it way behind the passenger seat.

Just go down to the local powersports shop and buy a tether. That way, if it falls out again, it will just hang around :p

My 88 SE does this same thing. Freaked me out the first time too. But, like previously stated, it makes things convenient to leave the car running while running into the store.

Or, if you battery goes to **** and you don't want to push start the car again.

On the way to school one day, my friend decided to rip my keys out of the iginition and drop them out the window. I was like WTF???? Why is the car still running? He's LHAO, while I'm stunned. Anyway, I stop and go back to get my keys. I liked it after that, during the winter especially. Keeping the car running and locking the doors while running in the store is better than having to start the car upon returning.

Been there tried that. Atleast on my car the Key code was never recorded when it was made (theft protection maybe). The dealer was able to give me all the dealer mainance history of the car though.

Had a nissan 200 sx with the key comming out problem. Actually after time just about any key would start it. Oh, and my motorcycle was like that before I replaced the ignition. Keys bounced out when driving and didn't notice until I got to work. Spent an entire evening looking up and down the roads trying to find the keys. Spotted them the next day on the way to work. Had been run over quite a few times.

the 71 camaro I had I have lost my keys many times for that thing and so I always had a screwdriver in the glove box and would start the car using that.

though I also had a push button starter and that would help start it at times also

though that car was scary I have kicked it once b/c it was a POS and the car friggen started or when I was reaching behind my seat the car also has st arted

that thing was haunted or something
