I cut a slot in my bumper...

Well I got a FMIC and the bumper opening only flows air to about 60% of the core... so I decided to cut a slot in the bumper... I haven't gotten the intercooler piping done yet though, and I also need new end-tanks to make my intercooler work... So here are pics with just the cut bumper on the car:

I still needa use tough up paint to finish the bumper because the yellow underside of the bumper looks ugly as hell!

BTW, I cut the slot with a switchblade I had lying around and finished it with a hand-file... which is why the slot looks wierd and shitty..... Took forever doin it this way!!!!!

good idea even though you only need 1/4 the frontal area of the intercooler feeding it, but then again, i'm one of the few people that likes his car looking normal....

OK. I have a serious question, and I'm going to be murdered for it....

If you put some black chicken wire or black mesh in there, does the cut disappear in the distance? I am considering this for more airflow, but would prefer not to see the cut...

With the dark area behind the opening, I'm sure it would.

I was thinking about the same thing. It's not that I care about the hole being seen, I just don't like the fact that you can see it's just a huge opening BEHIND the hole.

LOL!

you know i was going to post the same thing, then i thought "hmm.. i may catch some heat for it, so i'll just hold out for now.."

the keyword is BLACK mesh - so it doesnt stand out like silver chicken wire..

but yes i was wondering the same thing - i think it would also help catch a stone or something that might find its way in there on the highway.. that wouldnt be good for the FMIC or rad..

Well, it's not like I would be painting it white or something....But just having an big empty space is very obvious, and breaks the lines of the car (in my opinion).

i cut a hole on the top of the nose piece, right above the place infini cut!! its about 5 inches long by like 1 1/2 inches wide!! im addin some mesh grill in the spot and also putting mesh grill where the stock opening is under the nose!! i need to do this because on very hot days my car runs at 3/4 on gauge!! with the closed up nose it doesnt really get alot of air to the radiator.

im lookin for one of those headlight covers that have the slot in it, does anyone know where i can get it?

Yea, I wanted to keep my car looking stock, but I honestly don't think the front opening is large enough... Especially with my somewhat tall intercooler. Compromises...

I think that some black mesh wouldn't make the car look TOO different on an S4 bumper... But it might look kinda wierd on the "rounder" S5 bumper... no?

As for the bumper support, yes I took it out... I'm not intending on crashing anytime in the future Plus, my intercooler won't fit up front if I had the support there.

Before I put the fmic on, I'll have to relocate my overflow tank and rearrange some stuff back there. It's stupid to allow more flow up front only to have the air travel around things aft of the intercooler...

Dude, if your car runs at 3/4 on the guage, you have a serious cooling problem that has NOTHING to do with airflow to the rad. Cutting your bumper will not fix the problem.

The temp should be at 1/4 on "normal" days, not half. Sounds like you need to examine your cooling system and find the problem before you need to replace an engine.

Seems like everything is changing, since I'm not on the forum very often... Aaron Cake becomes a ricer, then a moderator.

hmm.. i was (and still partially am having the same issue)

ive been mostly chalking it up to the stock gauge being so unreliable..

before it would run at 3/4 (whole ottawa trip it ran that hot and i was very concerned)

i flushed the system, added water wetter, and replaced the clutch fan with an electric fan (i knew it would cool better because i was 'iffy' about the condition of the clutchfan)

now the car on a normal spring day (keep in mind the ottawa trip was during COOL weather and it still ran at 3/4 the whole trip..) anyways - in cooler weather it wont go past 1/4, most of the time it runs at 3/8, on a hot *** humid day, if im driving hard(er), the lowest it goes is 1/2, usually sits around 5/8, and just after ive come off a few redlined gears, it will hit 3/4 briefly..

comments?

(btw sorry for the hijack.. lol..)

Distance doesn't help that much, of course its not quite as noticable without a flash lighting up the intercooler. :-)
