Smile I bought a 10th Anniversary....

Some of you may have seen it at the SC RX-7s meeting this past weekend, but for those who haven't....

stickgoat again possesses an RX-7. This time, it actually runs.

I picked up this '88 10th AE from Kevin Landers. It's got 192k miles on the original motor, a new clutch, damn fine interior save for the seats, needs paint but once cleaned up it'll look nice til I can afford some, and it also has the AE bra, owners manual and all original service records.

It does need an engine rebuild as you may have guessed from the mileage. Odd things occurring with cooling system, and while it will hold boost, it doesn't boost much. It did, however, drive much better after I spent a couple of hours behind the wheel than it did when I first headed home with it, so that's encouraging.

Anyway, here are a few pics. It's absolutely filthy, I'm fixin' to clean it up today after I get a temporary tag from the DMV:

I'm sickening happy with it.

stickgoat, If I ever get to meet you, remind me to ask you to take your bra off.

I like how the bra actually has the 10th AE logo..

Yeah, the bra will be coming off, cleaned up, and stowed. It's in mint condition and I'd like to keep it that way.

You should get a compression check on that thing just for the hell of it and tell us how it turns out. I'd love to see the #'s on a damn near 200k tII engine

I still have it, still gonna keep it.

Nothing wrong with having both an S14 and an FC.

Sonic.... yep, I'm gonna run a compression test probably tomorrow, actually. Kevin told me it had something like 75psi.

Also planning to do the water injection trick and mayhaps the ATF deal depending on the results.

I took the bra off today. Lots of interesting paint damage underneath the top part of the bra. I went ahead and put that piece back on. Otherwise, it's quite nice.

75 is as low as I have ever heard for a running rotary. But if you rebuild it now you might not have any rotor housing damage from a blown engine later, although the internal parts might just be so old that they can't be reused. Kevin should be able to help.

Yeah guys, this thing is still roadworthy, but barely. IT loses coolant slowly (bad coolant seals), has overall very low compression (80 and 75 IIRC) and smokes quite a bit as well. I mean, it is just overall worn the hell out, but there arent any other major problems. The lack of boost is a function of low compression AND a bad leak at the turbo manifold, likely the gasket.

Yes, low compression can cause low boost, to a degree; compression, by definition, is a measure of how much air an engine moves (or how efficiently it moves it), and the turbo is dependent on the engine's air pumping ability.

This thing with seats, paint, and an engine will be pretty sweet. I bought it (after having done a vacuum hose job and clutch replacement on it for the owner) as a project to rebuild and sell, but just never got time away from everyone else's work and realized it would be best if I moved it out of my way as I had too many cars here.

Nice AE- you'll friggin love the hell out of it after a fresh rebuild, and of course the prerequisite interior custom bits (just to make it YOURS)

Well, I just did a compression test, and I'm about in need of a change of pants.

110psi on the front rotor, 120psi on the rear.

Put in some new spark plugs (old ones were completely fried), idle smoothed out immediately and the car cranked much quicker than normal.

I was having some cooling system pressure issues which seem to have been resolved with a new radiator cap on the thermostat housing. No more leaking and forcing of coolant into the overflow...

So...I'm now thinking that the motor itself is actually doing quite alright. The more I drive it, the better it seems to be. It's boosting what it should be, pulling quite nicely, and while it does still flood itself, it only happens if the car has been sitting less than 45 minutes. After that I can crank it first try, no problems.

This leads me to believe that perhaps my injectors are leaking....

But hot damn, look at that compression.

Damn Summer that means you're faster than me again. Well hell if your car is in such good condition than there is no reason that Reese can't work on my car tomorrow . Seriously though I'm glad it's running better, and to your liking. Now watch I'll be driving around in the P'up and see you in the 10th annie and wave and be like nice car. Hey at least yours is one color . Hopefully I'll see you guys around tomorrow, or at least tomorrow night.
