I blew up my first rotary

Just like the topic says, last night I confirmed my thoughts of a bad engine. i did a compression test and the front rotor was around 100 and the rear around 45-50, NOT GOOD. I am now trying to figure out the cause. i am thinking that the oil injection wasnt working properly. Is there any way to check on the operation of it ? The new engine will be running premix, just to be safe. The crappy thing is I only put maybe 700 kms on it since I bought my AE a few months ago.
What can I expect to pay for jdm engine? Is there a big difference between the s4 and s5? Any visual diffences or markings on it to make sure I get what I want?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

1.2k for jdm

s4 has EGR s5 does not
s4 = 8.4:1 s5 = 9:1
s5 has ever so slightly different spark plug position
s5 has electrical oil pump
s4 has mechanical
I think s5 also has harder stat gears and better doweling?

Yeah... I am pretty sure i just blew my first engine... I am only getting like 45-50 lbs on the front rotor and i didnt even check the rear rotary. I the engine i blew had 95,000 miles on it... I have only driven it for 3,000 miles.

That is how many kms I put on it since I have bought it.

1200 for an engine, hmmmmmmm, I am assuming that includes tranny, ecu etc.

I know a place that I can get an engine/5spd-tranny/ecu/turbo/intercooler, the works for a heck of a lot less then that.

I think I might have to buy a few when I am there and sell them. Might be a good way to pay for my rebuild

Any thought on what might have caused this? I know it could be alot of things but what should I look closer at?

do it yourself, get an overhaul kit from RotaryAviation, and new rotor housings, and you won't have to worry about the engine again for at least 100,000 miles (assuming side housings, bearings, & rotors are good)...cost ya about 2,000...

a j-spec block doesn't have to cost you 1,200. You can find them for cheaper, but plan on rebuilding it when you get it. They almost always have poor compression.

Yeah thats what I am affraid of. I caan get the whole thing engine/tranny ecu etc for 700-800 canadian. The only thing is of course is that they wont warranty any rotary engines. This is mainly a jdm honda importer who doesnt have much faith in the rotary. it would suck even worse if I bought another and it was screwed.
But for the price it might be worth the hassle and the 8 hour drive.

The old truism "you get what you pay for" applies to rotory engine rebuilds also...If you want it done right, do it yourself; nobody else cares about your car or engine more than you do...

Sorry, I am alittle late to this, but just want to ask a question.
Is it posible to have 0 compression in the rear cylinder?
My rebuilt engine only have less than 40k and I only drove it for 1k (3 gas tank).
thanks!

If you're starting & driving it, you definetly have more than 0 compression in the ROTOR housing (no cylinders in our world)

Very true, but I am talking about a used engine not a rebuild.

I think I might lean towards a rebuild, hmmmm

/too many decisions

Congrats on blowing your first engine! that sucks man, i recomend just finding the cheapest engine you can, and completely restoring it and rebuilding it, all new parts even if they look remotly bad, thats what im doing, i got the shop manual, 3 other books on the engine, and 3 videos, go to rotaryaviation.com and get the videos on how to overhaul it, they help alot

I know how ya feel, it took me months to decide what kind of rebuild/ reman, etc...to use...I finally decided to do it myself (with new rotor housings & RotaryAviation rebuild kit), and I'm happy I did, she runs great now...And then there's the pride of doing it yourself, it boosts your self-confidence to tackle damn near anything the car can throw at ya...

Yeah, thats a good point. I will probably end up buying the other engine, putting it in and just drive it and in the meantime rebuild the one that I am taking out this weekend.
