t04 upgrades are hyrbrids are the same thing, they are taking the stock turbo, and putting a T04 compressor wheel onto it, some times a T04 compressor housing is also used, sometimes a back cut on the exhuast turbine is also done during the rebuild. It depends what you want from your car as to what would best suit you, a full T04 will make more HP than a hybrid.

I just got a stage 3 upgrade from BNR supercars.
That includes TO4 compressor housing and backing plate and a 60-1 compressor wheel.
The hot side of the turbo stays the same. He also is porting the exhaust side of the turbo. He's also putting a bigger puck on and porting the waste gate to limit boost creep. It cost me 775 and my turbo as a core for this upgrade. I think I can run around 300 hp with this turbo.
This is just about the biggest hybrid you can have without going full to4, and then you need to buy a manifold and external wastegate. A hybrid is basically (I think correct me if I'm wrong) a stock turbo with a bigger compressor wheel. The hot side stays stock unless you go full to4.

And then:

Bigger injectors.
Mod Secondary fuel rail to accept larger injectors.
Rewired fuel pump per ECU spec.
FMIC.
FMIC piping, couplers, pretty BOV welded onto the piping close to the turbo.
Custom DP.
New clutch to handle the extra power.

there's more...

nice thing about the hybrid is you don't have to blow 1000s on external wastegates and manifolds.

Nope. Dale Clark (dcfc3s) has an 88 AE with a T04 on the stock ECU. Everything Josepi said I agree with, however.

Yeah, but with all the piggybacks he had, you might as well get a standalone.

If you're really serious about upgrading your car and go an all out route, such as a T04, you might as well do it right. Don't cheap out on the ECU.

Dale is one of the exceptions, Anyone know why he has a hard-on against Standalone ECU's? And where has he been lately?

Nobody understands why Dale hates standalones. It's like one of the universe's greatest mysteries. I just like to parade him when people start saying that something can't be done. Is his the best way? Uh, NO!

Anyway, he's been busy getting married. He and Kathy are house planning/scouting and planning the wedding, and they went to visit family for Thanksgiving. He's back in town again, but probably just doesn't have much time for FCs right now.

Oh, the turbo is pretty reliable. The heat buildup in/around the exhaust ports will certainly make your engine less reliable, however Remember, the stock turbine is already too small for a stock port engine - adding a bigger compress or will only exacerbate that problem. That's the big reason I don't like hybrids.
