hows this for an exhaust upgrade?

ive been reading around (very little so dont flame. PLEASE) and this is what i was thinking of for an upgrade untill i can afford a RB.

i have a 90 gxl coupe n/a by the way.

i was thinking... from the stock exhaust manifold, get a RB cat REPLACEMENT PIPE with presilencer connected to stock turbo long pipe... whatever that long pipe is called to a stock turbo Y pipe to stock turbo mufflers. considering the trubo parts having better flow due to wider pipes and bigger mufflers than n/a parts.

what do you think?

also wanted to know if stock s5 turbo exhaust are interchangeable with stock s5 n/a exhaust parts. will they bolt up in any combination?

if i get a good deal on a turbo pesilencer (i think is 3" instead of 2.5), should i get it. any disadvanages? i would get a RB cat REPLACEMENT PIPE to a turbo 3" pesilencer to a stock turbo II catback. would that work? i hear back pressures a bitch. i need to figure this out soon so i dont spend the money on somehting esle like turbo hahaha. thanks in advance

First - anyone flames you for reading - shame on them.

Yes, if you have access to some inexpensive stock turbo mufflers, use them if prefer a quiet tone.

You may want to consider the RB header.
The stock exhaust collector box is deliberately de-tuned to reduce noise.
The RB header mates to the RB pre-silencer.

I would think would be easier to start with your goals with this exhaust system?
I still think the stock Turbo II exhaust system is way too restrictive; the key to performance on the rotary is the exhaust.
Factory exhaust systems are just too restrictive, period.
Although it's hard to get a non-turbo to stay quiet, there are tricks to get them to behave.

How much are you willing to spend?
How much power are you looking to gain?
How quiet does the car need to be?

If you can answer those questions, I think we are better able to give you advice...

im looking to just buy used parts in the meantime if i can find them for cheap, if not ill keep saving. im not expecting power gains, just better flow but if the setup is just bad for my engine then ill just save up (saving up is goin to take a long time for me). i dont care how it sounds either.

i know restriction in the exhaust flow is bad, thats y im askin if the stock s5 turbo II catback has better flow then n/a. im thinking it would since it was made for turbos (bigger pipes and mufflers inlets and outlets) and becasue of this it would be an upgrade over the stock n/a catback. still need answers to questions above. thanks

Stick with what you've got right now.
If you're willing to save and spend money later, do that.
Check out the For Sale sections in here and eBay for "deals" on used parts.
Don't bother with the stock Turbo II stuff - it's a royal waste of time.

^what he said. No need in spending money on used parts that you already know you're going to replace. Just save the little bit of money that you would spend on the used stock parts and put it towards a good used RB system or something of that nature. There are also cheaper exhausts out there other than RB that give good performance for a cheaper price.

thanks fo the heads up reted. it seems like ill be buying the RB headers and presilencer (OR the cat replacement and presilenver) and save up for a nice catback. thanks again

ohh yeah what about the RB turbo presilencer? will it bolt to the n/a RB headers or to the cat replacement pipe? will it also bolt to the stock n/a catback? should i get it if i find a good deal? does it have better flow? does it have bad backpressure? thanks

The TII presilencer is not the same diameter as the N/A, and will not bolt up directly. You would need the pipe to taper from 2 1/2 to 3 to 2 1/2 at the Pre Silencer I believe. It is a large piece, and will do more for quieting your ride. Personally I plan on putting 2 XR-1's in a race pipe followed by a corksport catback.
