How to remove o2 sensor?

Ive been trying for the last two days to get this o2 sensor off of an '88 gxl and nothing seems to work. My 7/8 wrench is too long. My sockets aren't long or big enough. My adjustable wrenches wont fit in the tight space. Only thing i can think to do is remove that section of the exhaust to get to it. THIS IS PISSIN ME OFF! Any tips would help. What do yall do?

1/2" socket wrench with an o2 universal socket. It's a big deep socket with a wide slit that runs down the side for the wire to extrude.

You can get them from most auto parts stores. I got mine from Autozone.
Also this place has them:

Up here in Canada, a lot of parts stores let you rent one out...I think you guys have Parts Source there, eh? If not, take the pipe out...good luck.

P.S. Had never heard of China Doll, i.e. Adjustable Wrench...I can imagine where the name came from...
