Subject says it all. How do you get the ignition switch off the steering column>??

get a dremel and cut a grove in the heads of the two screws holding it to the column then just screw them out with a flathead screwdriver. Did it last week worked great.

Use a chisel and hammer to bang off one end to turn the stupid security fastener off.&nbsp Once it's loose, it'll come off easy.

I think my switch is bad as well. So can this be done without removing the steering wheel? I have a 91 vert with airbag. The manuel says the steering wheel has to come off to remove the ignition switch.

 

I've done it with the steering wheel on.
It's a bit more cramped, but you should be able to pull it off.

taking the steering wheel off will add an extra 5 minutes to the job if that, you might want to consider taking it off.

 

5 minutes is an exaggeration I think -- esp. for a vert.

Since we're talking airbag, make sure you disconnect the battery because you might disconnect the airbag at some point. This is something you probably want to check out in the FSM, as the airbag has a backup battery and may still deploy. I can't remember the steps off-hand and I'm not at home -- someone else here might have a better memory than I.

ANYway, there will be 4 nuts on the back of the steering wheel that hold the airbag unit on. Then you will have a little 'shoestring' thing still holding the airbag on so it doesn't just fall off. You'll also have a 'double' airbag connector (orange and blue) that you'll have to disconnect as well. That's where you'll want to make sure you disconnect all of the other appropriate connectors first. Then it's just the nut in the center of the steering wheel. Personally, my steering wheel is on tight enough I can't just yank it off, so you might have to have a puller to do this. Others have been able to just yank it hard and come off. Technically I suppose you could do this w/o disconnecting the airbag, but it would just be easier with it out of the way and not dangling around while you're trying to work.

Personally, I probably wouldn't bother w/ taking the steering wheel off.
