How much would you pay for this T2?

I've been looking for a t2 for ages, when I finally gave up a few months ago. Instead, I was going to get a 240sx fastback and put in an sr20det. A few days ago, I was talking to this guy with a t2 and asked him if he wanted to sell it. He said about $4k - 5k.

Anyways, here is what is done to it.

-1987 - White Turbo 2
-About 115k miles on the body
-Painted white a few months ago
-Clean title (haven't looked into the VIN yet)
-Rebuilt about 6 months ago with 2mm seals (I can't remember what he said, but some of the parts he used were from the 13-rew)
-Racing Clutch
-Racing beat DP
-3"magnaflow exhaust

How much do you think its worth?

Anyways, thanks for your responses ahead of time.

I wouldn't pay more than $4k for an 87, and then only if it's in damn-near-perfect condition.

Where did you find this?

Thanks, this is what I figured. I doubt he'll take less since he likes the car. Oh well, my search continues.

Technically in Seminole (between st pete and largo sorta). Found the guy selling it through his cousin/brother/whatever who we bought a rx7 off of for $200 with a dead motor.

For $5000, it should be Immaculate or good shape. For $4000, it should be in good-excellent shape with low engine miles (ie good rebuild).

A few things to consider:
- Leather interior - optional & BIG PLUS.
- Rear spoiler (optional in 1987) - Big plus
- Rear cargo / hatch cover - optional Big plus
- Extra tall arm rest - optional/plus

Look it over. Make sure it has the Turbo II wheels, Turbo TII front lip, Turbo II side skirts, etc..

If you really like it, get a rotary engine specific compression test done by your local mazda dealer. That should be the deciding factor.

The downpipe is a good sign (that pre-catalytic converter robs engine life). You might ask if he's replaced the primary catalytic converter.

Note if he has no cats & afermarket cone air intake, his car could be "boost creeping" too much. You can fix that by putting the stock airbox/intake back on until you get a boost controller of some type.

Other than that, if your serious spend 3 hours minimum looking the car over for rust, frame damage, water damage, etc... Drive it, make sure it boost good, etc...

Here's a good "buying tips" writeup"

I disagree. In VA it would be worth it if it were in EXCELLENT condition. I paid $2000.00 for mine it was running like crap, needed paint, clutch, downpipe, engine gaskets, hoses, tune-up, etc. The car is now in near perfect shape and I could easily sell it around here for $4000.00, maybe even $5000.00. I have had several people ask to buy it and it's NOT for sale.

Diddo akageals comments.

If it's in good shape and doesn't need any additional parts replacements, it's worth it.

Dude, the question should be if its worth it for YOU.
If it runs great and looks good, then maybe it is.

There are a lot of cheap, run-down, project cars out there, hence people getting them for nothing, and saying that even $2000 is too much.

But nice looking, well running ones are hard to find...
