How much will all this cost ?

Last Nov. my tranny went, on top of a number of other things that are broken in my car. I was wondering if you guys/girls could help me out on the basic "what is wrong" and "how much". Just briefly let me know what you think the problem is, and how much you think it would cost.

1) Tranny, Driving along one day, and slowly lost every gear, including reverse. Maybe something broke in the tranny (it makes and awful sound if you realease the clutch at any time) or maybe it just a clutch problem? I don't know. But it sounds bad.

2) Secondary Full Injectors are dead. Can't put much load on the gas after 3800, when they kick in, so I assume this means the secondaries are shot ?

3) Car smokes from time to time, when revd over 6k. May have something to do with the tranny problem, however, the smokes comes from the engine - not cool at all. The engine for rebuilt at 202k, now has 268k.

4) Interesting voltage readings. Ever since I got a new Alternator (I didn't install it) I have been seeing some weird readings. If I am on the gas, sometimes it read almost all the way up on the Volt Meter, and the Oil Pressure gauge also goes all the way up. Not only that, but the lights seem to dim/brighten with the change in Voltage reading. Sounds really bad, like a $1000 electrical problem ?

That is all I can think of right now (yeah right, "all", lol) because the I haven't drove the car in a year. The tranny busted last November, and the car has been run from time to time (when I am home from school). However, last break I had between when I could start it killed the battery. Damn. Hopefully you guys can give me a brief idea of what is wrong with these things, and maybe give me an estimate as to how much it would cost to fix it all up. Yeah, this sucks totally, but help me out, I am missing my Rex.

1) used tranny- $50-$200
2) most likely its the ground wire for the main engine harness not the injectors. If its got a poor connection, it doesn't let the ECU switch the injectors to the batch fire mode. Cost- time to fix ground wires
3) What color is the smoke?
4) oil pressure should be approx 30 psi at idle and approx 60-72 psi under engine load. Volt meter shouldn't be pegged out. Possible voltage regulator in the alternator. not sure on that one.

Ah yes, I should have included that. Anyway, its like a whiteish-blueish smoke? Maybe there is oil leaking towards the back of the engine (thats where the smoke comes from). Please tell me its something minor lol. Don't say that the engine **** the bed.

Maybe thats it. The fuel filter has been replaced, and that didn't make a difference. Not only that, but this happened all of a sudden. It isn't like I was driving, and the I slowly noticed a change, it was completely sudden when I decided to ring it out one day, about 120.

read this about the ground wires: https://www.rx7club.com/showthread.p...hreadid=199558

If your car is a non-turbo, it could be that the auxilary ports are not opening up. Go to the top of the 2nd gen section, click on 2nd gen archive and read around in there about 6 ports and aux (auxilary) ports.

Is the smoke coming out of the exhaust or from under the hood? If its coming from the engine bay, check to see if something is leaking and dripping onto the exhaust manifold or down pipe. If its coming from the exhaust (through a crack or something) then the smoke is being caused by the engine burning something other than gas.
Blue smoke = oil
white smoke = coolant
black smoke = gas (running rich)

which side of the engine does the smoke come from? Passenger side or driver side?

Phew, lots of questions. But thanks for answering.

The smoke seems to be coming from the engine (passenger side) and a little from the exhaust. I believe the front exhaust is pretty worn out. I can't really tell you where any leak would be under the car, because it is sitting in a small grass area. Hasn't moved in a year.

Speaking of 6th ports, I was told at an Rx7 meeting that they were not opening up. But, would I recognize this immediately, and why would they stop working (I know this happens to alot of Rx7s, but I don't know what causes it).

They stop working when the port sleeve gets stuck and stops rotating. The system is designed for 3psi of exhaust back pressure to move the actuator, which rotates the sleeve that opens the ports. If the actuator has a vaccuum leak and will not hold pressure, it won't work. If the sleeve gets all dirty and gummed up (and you should see one after it comes out of a 15yr old motor) then it will get stuck or may not rotate. Click here for pictures of sleeves: http://www.pineappleracing.com/Prod-pr6pi.html

As for the smoke, if something is leaking, you have to find it. I don't know what else to say about that.

Thanks for the info.

And BTW, I was just looking at your car, not knowing it was yours a little while ago when I was looking for a pic of a silver 86 (that's what my car is, and I don't have pics on this computer). Nice car !!

you should also know that if you keep running it with your voltage pegging like that it will ruin your battery....same thing happened to me. It caused the battery to actually leak fluid out the top and killed some of the cells.
