How much shaft play on the turbine?

Ok guys here I am again with yet more questions for the gurus. I just got hte turbo inlet duct off "**** whoever made that bottom connector on the pipe because it was a bitch to get to". Ok never the less I got my hand to the turbine finally the shaft has no in and out play but does have some side to side. I am not sure how much is acceptable it doesn't move alot sloppily side to side but with minimal pressure I can get the shaft to move maybe an 8th of an inch from side to side. The turbo upon closer inspection is covered with oil on the front side of the turbine leaking down the side. There is also a nice coating of oil under the car I don't know if this is from the turbo or engine as I can't see any noticeable leaks anywhere on the car but on the turbo. So my friends do you think it's time for a new turbo? The car holds no turbo pressure even when I can get it running "didn't start this morning". I didn't think a bad turbo would keep the car from starting I thought it would just mean the turbo wouldn't spool. Ok that's all for now.

Very little play is acceptable. 1/8th of an inch is a little much, sounds to me like your impeller would be hitting the housing with that much play. And no, there shouldnt be any oil in the cold side of the turbo at all!

Sounds like you need a new turbo or a rebuild
