How much will it handle? Its a 88 Auto..

Alos does ayone know of shift kits for them and and other upgrades for the auto...

Also adding a large cooler tot the trans really makes the auto shift harder and snap your neck.. damn

I destroyed the auto in my vert with only an intake and catback. I don;t think it was good enough to handle the stock HP.

Destroy How? explain...

I assume you burnt the auto up from the added power?

Cooked the fluid, over heated the tranny?

This is the reason I have a big *** cooler for the auto..

Tradionally Autos are bullit proof, unless you neutral drop them...

Not really sure how I blew that puppy up but it was toasted. I was not even very hard on it. I never nuetral dropped any car that was mine. Auto do not like to downshift much; well the one they put in these cars don't anyhow. As long as you plan to only accelerate hard from a stand still you're OK. But when you're crusing at 40 and decide to stomp on it, the tranny will get real mad at you. And nobody wants a mad tranny. It will only let you do this to him a hand full of times before he decides to cook himself. They also do not like that damn "HOLD" button Mazda keeps putting on autos (so they break).

you're gonna want to get a much higher stall torque converter. That'll go good with the tranny cooler you got. As for a shift kit, I don't know.

the one in my vert started dieing around 145k and reverse went out around 152k, i was still stock, and did not drive it very hard, do a 5-speed swap instead of waisting your time trying to bullet proff the auto........

it worked for me

-Shawn (encouraging people to do the 5-speed swap since i've done mine)

From dealing with tens or hundreds of 2gens I have some experience with the auto tranny. NONE of it good. OUt of about 15 auto's, I have yet to be in a crisp shifting one, regardless of maintenance or mileage. Also, I have yet to be around one that either wasnt already slipping or did within 6 months of my presence around it. These are on stock nonturbo cars. The stock auto tranny isnt even acceptable for a stock output engine. In fact, I bought a partscar (blown engine) with a newly rebuilt auto tranny, it had 100 miles on it. IT was a professional, warrantied rebuild. I sold it to another forum member, and he alerted me that not even a year afterwards the REBUILD slipped and died.

Auto trannies are not only bad for performance, they cause excess carbon buildup on rotor facings as well as 6 port sleeves and actuating rods....

Auto trannies are the devil. This is literally the worst major component design I have ever seen or heard of in an automotive application. There are NO good examples of an rx7 automatic.

Are the FD autos the same way? Why did they even bother with autos in an rx7...

Only thing I might try without cracking it open and spending a lot of coin is a larger fluid cooler and converting to B&M's Trickshift. A little expensive, but B&M makes a fantastic product.

Other than that.... look to having a torque convertor rebuilt to match the output from your engine dyno, and open the valve body, widen some of the restrictor holes, and replace some of the springs.

This won't stop band or clutch failure though... this is launching and shifting performance only. I don't think anyone makes aftermarket bands or clutches...

Damn I am at a loss of words..

We have this GXL 88.. with Auto.. Drag race it all the time.. It has single free flow exhaust 2.5" and cone filter.

All stripped out..It has handled neutral drops..and holds 3rd gear till 115, before it will shift.

I love this auto it seems great and better built compared to the N/A 5 speed..I have snapped more 5 speeds and never broke one auto..

I am thinking of adding a small portion of nitrous to the car and see if the cooler will keep the tranny cool enough.
